What multitool do you carry when riding?
« on: February 09, 2016, 02:51:17 PM »
GliderJohn provided what inspiration caused this post.

When you are riding, do you carry a multitool and if so which brand and what tools on it do you like best? How does it hold up?

I say " when riding" because you might use a different one when not riding, just covering the base to keep it motorcycle related.

Anyone have on engraved with the MG logo? There, now MG related too.

Old Leatherman with screwdriver bit attachment. No preference for any particular thing. I back that up with a Motion Pro MP tool to give me some wrench capability.

I have a Leatherman tool.  I think the model is called Wave or something like that.  It's always in my tankbag when I'm traveling, but only occasionally do I remember to take it when I'm just out for a day ride.  Gotta get into a better habit with that.

Anyway, the Leatherman has been useful several times to fix little things on my bikes as well as others.  Mostly the screwdriver and needle nose pliers.

Best,

Carlo

PS: Last summer I ran into a situation when I needed my Leatherman but didn't bring it.  Luckily another patron in the restaurant where I stopped for lunch had one -- same model as mine -- and saved my bacon.

On my bicycle, I carry a Topeak "Alian".  Now that you asked, it might be a good idea to get another one for motorcycling.  I guess the chain tool would be a little unnecessary though.       Right now I carry a small kit of cheap tools like an adjustable wrench, slip-joint pliers, offbrand Allen type wrenches, and screwdrivers.

I carry a leather man when traveling, I guess I should carry it all the time when riding, but I have a full tool kit on my Stelvio that will hopefully get me going should the need arise.

At one point, I had a Leatherman "Crunch". It has a vice grip tool that actually works quite well. However, in general i'm an anti multi tool guy. The seperate tools work much better and don't mung things up. Also, it seems that most of the features on the tool are useless.

Years ago my MIL gave me a Gerber as a gift. Used it quite a bit and after about 20 years or so of use it jammed up and it could not be opened. Put it in a drawer and forgot about it. Sometime later ran across one at a garage sale still in the package and got it for $12 and it had the warranty info in it. So I sent my old one in and recieved a new one about two weeks later. So have two good ones for $12 at this time and always take one on the bikes and use them around my rural place. Handy things much of the time.

I have a Schrade multi tool, as good as a Leatherman but less expensive (Guzzi content)  a Swiss army knife, complete with bottle opener, corkscrew, and toothpick,  and a 12 V bulb with a couple of leads soldered on it in a small leather bag. That, and a Slime mini compressor/tire patch kit has been all I've ever needed besides the standard Guzzi tool kit.

My original Leathermen.

One of the unlikely uses for me is arcing solenoids. I've done it on a diesel, my Jeep and a couple of bikes. Sometimes the current is strong enough to temporarily "weld" the blades together at their butts though they always come loose... eventually.

I keep a couple of cheapo $2.50 multi-tools from Walgreens on hand.

That way, if I come up on someone who is broke down, I can just toss him one and be on my way.

I used to ride about 3500 miles a year, mostly on Triumphs with a few 70's Ducati and Guzzi and two Harley Shovelheads... I never carried tools on the bike or in my pocket....One time the 74 750 Ducati came home in the truck...And the wiring harness on one of the Shovelheads burned to a crisp...But a cord from a discarded lamp at the curb and a rock as a tool I fabricated a jumper wire and limped back home... Nowadays I carry a multi purpose tool, a compact light, and the all necessary smart phone...

Leatherman.  One of the original ones.  Got it about 10 years ago.  Bought an old jeep on a farm sale and it was laying between the body and the seat.  Wasn't there when I looked the Jeep over, but was there when I got it home.  Assume it fell from somebody's pocket when they sat in it.  Carry it everwhere except to work (work in an office) but if I'm not there it's on my belt, have worn out one leather holster, and now have about worn out a second nylon/plastic one.  A tool, I just can't see how I'd ever be able to live without, and will replace it in a heartbeat if I ever lose it or it wears out.  Amazingly tough, well built little tool.  It's almost like an appendage anymore.  It's just there on my left hip and can be in my left hand and flipped open in an instant.  Use it for everything, dang handy around the farm.  The screwdrivers have seen the most use after the pliers.  Have lent it out numerous times at rally's or wherever when others needed it.

Leatherman Wingman, not just when riding. Handy at work in the shop, around the farm, wherever.

Wife gave me a fresh one engraved with our anniversary date. Got my old one for a back up.

When you are riding, do you carry a multitool ...?

Anyone have on engraved with the MG logo? There, now MG related too.

:)

I'll be taking a preventative approach to my new V7 II, which means by-the-book pre-ride checks and probably indicator paint on key fasteners.

I also intend to keep a spare set of Pirelli Sport Demons and inner tubes at home. For longer trips, the inner tubes may come with me on the bike, just to speed up repair.

In terms of tools, maybe a few specific to this bike that I could see myself, as someone who is not a mechanic, actually using.

My situation is complicated by the fact that I expect to use this bike in areas where access to appropriate tires and inner tubes may take a few days. Just makes sense to have spares.

Yup. Tools are sometimes good to have along because even if something happens that I can't fix, always easier to ask someone to help, asking them if they also have the tools is a bit much

Years back I stopped on the way home to help a damsel in distress change a flat tire. No big deal I thought. Off comes uniform shirt, belt, the works.

I ask her to open the trunk to get the spare out. I  ask her where it is when I find none.

She asked me "you don't have one?"

Wondering......On a modern bike with full electronic engine management....What are you going to repair with a Leatherman type tool if you're stranded on the roadside?
