Who has been to Nowhere, OK and Slapout?
« on: July 01, 2016, 07:55:19 PM »
I was reading something other than Catholic Digest and Hustler when I read about Nowhere, OK. Told Beaver and it was one of our destinations on the way to John Day, OR.

Slapout is a town in the panhandle that got its name when the owner of the general store always said he was slap out of what you wanted. Wally Bishop, longtime Guzzi friend broke down there about 40 years ago. The building that has a small store and bays for repairing vehicles looks new. They have their own zip code. Pop is 6 or 8.

Of course, we had to go to the bustling town of Beaver. Beaver took a picture of B ig Beaver. Look on a map and you'll see it is a long way from Beaver, OK to Beavers Bend.

I've been to Nowhere before. It's right next to Joe Eish's place with his place closer to the middle.

I just rode through Slapout about 10 days ago.  A friend and I were coming back from a mountain tour of Colorado and stopped there for gas.  We lucked out by riding under the cloud cover of a nearby thunderstorm and beat the heat!

Glider. I'll put Hooker on my bucket list.

Jim Rich. I only read Catholic Digest so don't know about the centerfold.

I've been to Joe Eish's place three times and couldn't get there again without a guide.

Dusty. Slapout is near the panhandle. Did you know there is a Dusty WA? We were close to it.

They were actually open and had gas?

About half the time I ride past there, it's closed.  So, I've never planned it as a fuel stop.

Are we talking the store at the very West end of Slapout ? It has always been open during normal hours when I have been through there . Even the "Mercantile" located in Kenton has been in somewhat regular operation for years now , and believe it or not , Kenton is WAAAAYYY more remote than Slapout  Actually Mike , you know that , having been through Kenton at least once .

Yeah.  Slapout is on US-412 at a junction, a relatively well-traveled route.  On more than one occasion when I've passed through there, the store at the junction is closed.

Same thing at Elmwood

I think you are referring to the junction just East of Slapout , and yes , that store isn't open on any regular basis . The newer store on the West side is pretty busy .

Oh , and to correct myself from earlier , yes Turnip , Slapout is just barely in the panhandle . I have sat out a couple of big T storms in the little village , and also shot a gap in a line of storms that required doing 100 MPH for a few miles to clear . Amazing country , kind of a unique
landscape inhabited by some very resilient people .
