Wiring in "driving" lights on a V7 Stone
« on: September 13, 2019, 10:42:30 AM »
I'm adding a pair of small LED lights, mounted to the crashbars. On-off switch will be mounted to the left side of the handlebars. Is there a convenient location to tap into for switched 12 volt power? Somewhere that won't involve removing the tank or hacking into the harness?

I believe the GPS connector that is under/behind the headlight is a fused 12V connection? If the LED driving light draw is low enough I would think that might work.

Thanks! I do remember seeing an unused connector there now that you mention it. The lights are 12 watts each.

It comes from a 15 Amp fuse if you put a 5A between the connector and the switch it should blow first if you get a short in the driving light.

Yea, there's a Tom Tom (GPS) connecter (green) stashed up near the headlight bucket.  Goes hot when ignition is switched on.

Yes, #11 in the schematic linked by Kiwi Roy and powered by keyed switch, which is #14.

And good advice from Roy re low amp fuse for the intended 2 amp load.

Cool. Already ordered the Mercedes "piping" (connector with wires referenced in another thread I found on the subject) to hook to it.

Yes.  It's on the headlight circuit.  I tapped my fused, heated grips off of it with no issue on my V7ii.  Koso Apollo 120mm type.

I picked up the expensive little "piping" yesterday at Mercedes-Benz of Hagerstown and wired up the lights this evening. Cheapy switch, Emgo brackets and small lights all from Amazon. Very noticeable in daylight, need to get it out dark to aim them. Less than $100 for everything.

If you prefer to isolate auxiliary component wiring from the motorcycle Amazon has nice fused sub harness's with relays and a momentary and/or rocker switch all for $13.00.

Sub harness wires directly to the battery via ring terminals then the a trigger wire from the relay is spliced into a keyed power source.

I probably won't be running them all the time, only as "ditch lights" after dark.

No photo of the green GPS connector, but I saw it in another thread here. Mine is bundled with a few others just forward of the steering head.

Charlie, it appears you have already dealt with this but for future reference, I have replaced that connector with a standard SAE two prong plug when I have messed with that. Very inexpensive and makes obtaining the mating connector easy. A little solder and shrink wrap and that's it. FWIW, the shielded end of the connector is always with the power feed, as opposed to the device end.

I could have any number of connector types, but didn't want to hack the harness, so chose the Mercedes part. Definitely more expensive, but was "plug and play" and looks factory.

Does anyone know the part # of the Mercedes/Tomtom plug referred here? Or have an idea of where I could order one. Want to add some visibility to my V7iii
