Title: Let's see your helmets!
Post by: insignia100 on August 01, 2018, 10:17:20 PM
I'd like to see what helmets you guys are rockin' on your Guzzi's. I'm not particularly happy with my Scorpion EXO-T1200 full face helmet and am considering a new helmet for warm weather. I'm really liking some of the new retro styled helmets that are coming out, and I'm even considering switching to a *gasp* 3/4 helmet. Normally I'm more of a function over form kinda guy, but the Guzzi has... changed me somewhat. I'm curious what everyone else is wearing while riding their Guzzi's.

Nolan 104 modular here.  Not wearing a helmet is not an option for me,to but as much as I like my shoei 3/4, you can't beat a full face in a hailstorm.  The modular gives me both options in a single, clunky hat.  And a sound option for my GPS.

I wore Icon Variants for years until recently, when I switched to a Scorpion EXO AT-950. I like the Scorpion ok (mostly the sun shield), but I'll probably go back to the Variant at some point. Whenever the sun's out, I'm riding into it, so the peaked brim on both helmets is a useful feature for me. The optics on the Variant's visor were nearly flawless, and the outward curve meant any water that got inside the visor would just drip off, and not run down the inside; the top edge on the Scorpion has a lot of optical distortion. There hasn't been enough rain since I got the Scorpion for me to judge its wet-weather reliability. I've also had my head hit pavement at 30mph in a Variant, with no appreciable trauma, but that mostly says how well it fits my head.

About a year ago, I bought a Caberg Duke from an Italian website (clearance price + free shipping outweighed my concerns about no DOT sticker and not being able to try it on before buying). It was nice and well-made and it fit the back, top, and sides of my head very well, but my nose was too big for the sun shield and my jaw was pretty snug against the chin bar. Lesson learned.

I don't have a good shot of the Scorpion, but here's the Icon after getting reflective tape. Yes, that's a plastic duck in a hockey helmet. My daughter asked me to put him somewhere with a nice view.

I have a Shoei/HJC shaped head so Arai's traditional fit helmets never worked for me.  I also couldn't bring myself to pay Arai prices.  However, I picked this up on Revzilla for half price because it was the last one they had.  The Vector 2 is more medium oval shaped and the interior foam has removable strips in 5mm increments to customize the fit.

It's no lighter than a $100 HJC.  I doubt it's any safer than any other DOT & Snell rated helmet.  The shields cost twice as much as an HJC and I much prefer the latching mechanism on HJC helmets.  I should have bought a pinlock shield for it because it fogs like crazy at anything under 65 degrees.  On the plus side, the interior is a really nice place to stuff your head for 5 or 6 hours.  The lining is super soft and I don't get any hotspots.  The venting is incredible.  It has the best venting of any helmet I've ever owned.  The shield locks up tight and seals out rain completely(but instantly fogs up).  It has the shell maker's initials Sharpie'd onto the interior of the shell.  That's kind of cool.  It doesn't bobble or shake at all when I look over my shoulder before a lane change like many cheap helmets with poor aerodynamics.  The graphics/paint are beautifully done.  It's fairly quiet but not as quiet as my old Shoei TZ-R.

All in all, I think it's a nice helmet but I would have been disappointed if I'd paid full price.  I think the RPHA line of HJC is about 80-90% of the quality and features of an Arai or Shoei at 50-60% of the price and if I was going to buy a helmet at full price it would probably be an RHPA.  Nolan's are nice but the one's I've tried are loud and don't fit.  Same with AGV, which is too bad because I like the Simoncelli and some of the Rossi graphic schemes.  They're fun.

We have about 5 or so of the Bell classics in the house and the latter ones dont fit anywhere near as well as the old ones.
I have therefore changed by open face helmet to the Shoei JO and LOVE it. Best open i have ever owned with its built in visor. I bought my wife a matching one also even though she loves her candy apple Bell. She never wears the Bell anymore either. Full face we both use Schuberth C3 pro's but they are not retro.

Still wearing my old half shell from Harley days.
Been thinking about more protection, maybe 3/4, but this one feels like part of me after 12 years.
Never wore full face in all my days.

I like my Schuberth C3 Pro, and HJC RPHA-Max. Both are quieter than most others I have worn. Both fairly light for modular helmets, easy to operate. I think the shield on the HJC is better (and cheaper) than the Schuberth. AND, it seems only BMW dealers have Schuberth parts when you need them.

I wear a Biltwell Gringo, with Bertoni goggles.

I wore a 3/4 helmet my entire life... until my wife started riding, and I realized that I really wanted her to wear a full face... and that made me realize I was giant hypocrite.

So I bought a Gringo. Gives me all the "feel" of my old 3/4, with none of the claustrophobia I get from a regular full face.  I don't even notice the chin bar.

Now, that said... the Gringo is a compromise when it comes to safety, it's a budget priced helmet, and won't offer the kind of protection that comes with a Snell rated SHOEI for example. But, for a good mix of "feel" and fair protection against sanding my lips off on asphalt... this works.

Shoei guy for many years.  These days I usually wear the Neotec because the flip up style is just so damned convenient, but I also have and occasionally use an RF1200.  The one odd ball I have currently is a Scorpion EXO1200.  I got it at a really good price and it's a decent helmet, but I still prefer the Shoei lids.

I was a big Shoei and Arai fan until the Dexter Ford/Brian Catterson/Motorcyclist magazine Snell approval fiasco. I started trying out value brands as a result and was surprised how companies like HJC have closed the gap on the prestige helmet brands. Presently, I’m using an HJC IS-Max II with a snap-in Sena 10uPAD Bluetooth unit. It incorporates a Pinlock-ready shield, a tinted drop-down visor, fair ventilation, a removable liner, and good noise suppression. If it fits your head shape, this helmet is an extraordinarily good value at less than $200. Plus, the IS MAX II is one of just a few helmets that the Sena 10uPAD will fit. I like this setup...

The Vozz helmet - built in safety release system - the front front comes off, leaving the rear piece as a pillow without any chance of twisting the spine - comfortable, feels lighter than same weight full face as it grips the head in more places - ideal for those of us wearing spectacles - quick & easy on & off & no strap. Well worth checking out. Love mine.

Ventilation is good.  It's modular with a sun shade.  I can wear it fully open at speed and the sunshade protects my eyes with my glasses on.  I can also keep the shield open by one notch it sedom blow shut.  It's the best helmet I've owned, but it's also the most expensive and my first Shoei.

GussitaJohn gave me the emblem.

After years of Arais, they changed the sizing and the same size didn't fit me any more so I looked around and ended up with an Xlite carbon helmet;

Fits me better than the old Arai and is much lighter, ventilation is as good and is a little quieter, only downsides are; it fogs easier when stationary but that's probably because it seals around the chin much tighter (can remove the seal if required), it's a little tighter to get glasses under it and having a wider/higher chinbar means I need to actively tilt my head down to see the speedo on more upright bikes but the face opening is higher meaning I don't have to bend my neck quite so far back in a full-blown sports/race crouch.

Plus it was a little over half the price of the Arai and a small fraction of the price of a carbon Arai...

thanks,
bike or helmet color? I originally bought a white bell to paint to match the bike, then they had these blue ones on sale with the brown liner, so I went that route.

I chose the most masculine of cars for the paint color. It is VW denim blue.

The Bell Star is mine, the HJC is Gail's. Both Snell rated. I've been wearing Bell medium full-face helmets for years. When Gail began riding with me she tried on at least a dozen helmets -- the HJC in XS was the cheapest we found that fit well and had the Snell label.

(https://thumb.ibb.co/cOcEae/3helmets.jpg) (https://ibb.co/cOcEae)

The LS2 Track, a 3/4 helmet, is new. The Bell does flow a lot of air but ATGATT notwithstanding I decided that noodling around town at 45mph on the Triumph at 90F was just too sweaty. The LS2 in medium was $100 and fits great (pleasant surprise because a lot of online reviews said the sizing was too tight).

I wear mostly HJCs in the here and now but think the Shoei Z100 was the most attractive helmet ever made...  Designed by Giorgetto Giugiario and sold in the 80s. I kept two that are several decades past their throw away date, not even wearable, now they are just garage art. If you could keep the shell and rebuild them with new everything else, I'd do it.

So I have always bought high end Aria and Shoei helmets, but I just got a Bell for normal everyday helmet and I am impressed. I think I paid $360 for it. Looks great, comfy and has their MIPS, which may just be a marketing thing. I just wish that they had the transition shield for it.

I keep some of the nicer old helmets in a IKEA case in the kitchen.

I love the Scorpion EXO900 that they quit making. (own 4) there fog free coating is great especially here in the humid S.E.
How is the visor on your helmut? is it trying to tear your head off at 60 MPH? I really miss the old sun visors from the old 1/2 and 3/4 days and have been considering the dual sport types for the next one.

while touring northern California a few years back my Scorpion Modular refused to open (latch broke, a lot of fun getting that off w/o).  As I have a bizarrely large head (3XL) the options were few in the shops in the area but I finally found a 3XL Shoie Neotec that fit like a glove.  I normally don’t spend north of $600 for a helmet but it was my only option.  Glad I did, it’s much quieter, much more comfortable and vents better too.  Really, I would not have thought there was that big a difference between a $250 Scorpion and a $600+ Shoie but on my pumpkin head at least there clearly was, YMMV.

It doesn't tear your head off (neither the Icon nor the Scorpion), but it takes a little getting used to. In calm air, it provides a bit of lift, actually, which is nice. In rougher air, it makes the buffeting a bit more pronounced. Probably the worst is coming up on a semi's slipstream in a crosswind. Once you know what to expect, it's rarely an issue.

Caberg Duke here. Had to stick some extra fabric on the chin piece as the stock weave let far too much air in. After that I love it! Good Sharps rating and far better value for money than many "brand name" options.

More Guzzi content: give me something I can afford to replace at 3-5 year intervals. Both Snell and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation recommend replacing your lid regularly. Below is the Snell Foundation's explanation:

“The five-year  replacement recommendation is based on a consensus by both helmet manufacturers  and the Snell Foundation. Glues, resins and other materials used in helmet  production can affect liner materials. Hair oils, body fluids and cosmetics, as  well as normal "wear and tear" all contribute to helmet degradation.  Petroleum based products present in cleaners, paints, fuels and other commonly  encountered materials may also degrade materials used in many helmets possibly  degrading performance. Additionally, experience indicates there will be a  noticeable improvement in the protective characteristic of helmets over a  five-year period due to advances in materials, designs, production methods and  the standards. Thus, the recommendation for five-year helmet replacement is a  judgment call stemming from a prudent safety philosophy.”

I have many helmets!  I am currently using the Bell DLX Qualifier with the "Devil May Care" graphic.  I've always been into warbirds and it kinda goes with the new paint on the CalStone.  It has a nice "Transitions" visor that I really like.  Also wearing the Vanson Chopper jacket that a buddy of mine got too fat for before he could break it in.  Score!

I made the mistake of wearing this helmet on a long group ride.  My face was sandblasted, and my eyes couldn't take the wind over 40mph.  This is now my go-to helmet for quick store runs on the Metropolitans.  Plus it fits the kids so we can 2-up on those short trips.

I was a big Shoei and Arai fan until the Dexter Ford/Brian Catterson/Motorcyclist magazine Snell approval fiasco. I started trying out value brands as a result and was surprised how companies like HJC have closed the gap on the prestige helmet brands. Presently, Im using an HJC IS-Max II with a snap-in Sena 10uPAD Bluetooth unit.

Here’s an English police helmet, issued to my dad by the Essex Police in the early 50s. I suspect the police on both sides of the Atlantic were thicker of head in those days.
I’ve not worn this helmet since the mid 70s, and suspect I’d not get away with it now.

More relevant question would be whether this thing will actually protect your noggin when you need it to. No way I would wear a helmet like this if I am expecting to protect my head. Fashion is great but real head protection is better.

You might "could be" but you won't.

Have you (or anyone here) ever been busted for a non-conforming helmet?    I ride with a lot of folks, and I've never even HEARD of anyone I know being ticketed when they have a helmet on their head that looks like a helmet, like your old one does.

Sure, you can read every once in a while about someone daring the cops with a Tupperware bowl and calling it a helmet, but if it's actually a helmet, no cop is ever going to go poking around for DOT stickers or Snell certs ....

Although I must say there IS quite a "perceived risk" gap between your little helmet and someone who changes their $750 Schubert every 5 years because there might be some UV degradation of the shell or deterioration of the interior foam ... !!

A friend of my "now retired" boss was pulled over for wearing a non approved helmet.  The state trooper told him that the fine for non approved was higher than for not wearing a helmet at all, but of course you are more likely to get pulled over with no helmet.

Of course in a helmet optional state you won't get pulled over for a non approved helmet.

My wife has a bad time with helmets.   Her head's smaller than an XS - currently she has a 6-year-old Fulmer modular helmet, which she likes, but it's barely small enough.   I just put a metal click-latch on it to replace the "D-rings" which are a pain, and we both mounted Sena comm systems to our helmets.

We didn't want to get new helmets just prior to a month-long trip and trying to break them in away from home, but when we get back, we'll probably look for one for her that will really fit like she wants ...

You would win that wager!  For some reason novelty helmets are OK in Alabama but you better not be caught in Tennessee wearing one.  LOL!

Kentucky is helmet optional and so is Florida.  I was going down I-65 in Alabama one day and saw a guy with a ball cap on his head going to Florida from Kentucky.  He was around Montgomery and I was wondering if he was going to make it to Florida without getting pulled over.  Would be really bad if he didn't even have a helmet with him.

It's hard to find an XXS helmet in stock, let alone from a quality brand like Shoei at such a LOW price.  It's an older model but worth a look-see, I think.

Wait until late fall and search out the bigger online retailers. they will be selling stuff for 1/2 retail in some cases.

Me, I have a XXL head and can have a hard time getting deals.

XS is much easier to find but still too large for my little braincase.

GG: the helmet below is available in XXS. It is a youth helmet, so the range of sizes are a little different. A Youth medium is the same size as an HJC XXS.

I have too many helmets and not enough heads! Currently, Kabuto (love the ratchet chin strap and inner sunshade), AGV and Scorpion. Full face and 3/4...oops I forgot, I also have a Biltwell.

Caberg Trip. I've been riding since 1952, this is the most comfortable quietest helmet I've ever had.

Nolan N44 with light tint mirror shield.

Helmet has great visibility (best I've owned) and is a modular design. Fairly light, Good head/top ventilation, but shield fogs easily without pinlock. Easily the noisiest helmet I've had in years. The NCOM intercom is a rebranded Sena with decent sound and great battery life. I have the mic tucked away, only use it for GPS guidance and music. Oddly, this helmet does a good job muting high pitched sounds such as valve tap, etc, but makes the exhaust boom louder. My other helmet an AGV Skyline (6 years old) is the opposite, lets in the high pitched noises and mutes lower.

The worst part of the helmet is wind noise. Love the fit, comfort, finish and visibility, but wouldn't get again.

'Been wearing a Shoei Qwest helmet for the last 10 years.  Past time to replace, I suppose.  My new Bell Star MIPS DLX should arrive in the big brown truck sometime today.

I wore Bell back in the 70's when they were a good helmet, but they must have made a decision to start making low quality helmets.  Appears that they're now making good stuff again, and the Bell Star is a great fit for my long oval noggin.

Hi Everyone, it's been a while so I guess my account and posts have been deleted from Wildguzzi.  Anyway, I had a motorcycle related accident on May 28th, so here are
(https://thumb.ibb.co/dSA1oz/DSC_0457.jpg) (https://ibb.co/dSA1oz)
the pictures of my Shoei helmet which did it's job wonderfully.

Notice the damage on the front? I’ve had similar or worse damage on the front of my helmets 2 of the 3 times I’ve been down. I’ll try to find pics of mine. Anyways, this is why no open face for me! I threw away my half helmet I had for touring. I’m too beautiful to risk it!!!

My first helmet that I still have. It’s over five years old so has been mostly retired. Pic was selfied while stopped!

My next helmet. The major road rash was on the front but I didn’t post it bc I didn’t want my mom to freak out too much

My Icon to replace the Z1R. It was destroyed on I-85 northbound when I hit a ladder. Again the front and side took the brunt. Again no pics of damage for above reasons!

My current helmet. Darker than I’d like but it was on closeout! Also currently needing bug removal. I’ll do it later...

I've always seen old photos (usually posed or photo-op or advertisements) from the 30s, 40s, and 50s of guys riding bikes in aviator caps, with a bill on the front.

And SELDOM do you see a chin strap to hold it onto the guy's head.   I'm sure that a lot of that is due to the fact that the picture is "posed", like the old magazine covers of a guy supposedly at high speed on a bike with no glasses or any eye protection, which just isn't possible.

I'm sure that some of that aviator-cap-ability is due to the fact that the old bikes were pretty slow.   I remember reading a story by one of the guys who rode to Hollister for the big to-do that a lot of the guys were on wartime Harley and Indian 45s, that would do 45 or 50 MPH on a long run ... but even so, I know that at 65 or 70 with an open-face helmet and goggles, that the wind is pulling so hard on the helmet that the strap starts to choke you ... I can't image what it would be like trying to hold an aviator cap on your head at speed!    Leather flight helmets, I can see that; but a Johnny Strabler-style cap .... ?

My uncle Fred was taught to ride a motorcycle when he enlisted in the Army during WWII and served as a courier. Thank goodness, he was one of the lucky ones that made it back to the farm. As soon as they were available, he bought a Harley 45 and toured the USA, brought back a wife from New Mexico. He continued to ride until he was 90 years young....ALWAYS on a Harley. I don't recall that he ever wore a helmet until around the middle sixties, always had on a cap with the Harley logo on it. When I was a young teenager, he frequently came by our house and took me for a ride. He treated me to my first Big Boy hamburger, I hadn't even heard of a Big Boy up to that time. I still miss him. RIP Freddy.
