Just a word re WG
« on: January 08, 2016, 02:29:02 PM »
Yep , it is Winter . Fellas , no one likes a good debate more than me , and good natured banter is a beautiful thing , in fact humor and disagreements often go a long way towards keeping the board
active , which I think we all agree is a good thing . However , maybe we should ease up on the baiting just a little , and remember to state our opinions as just that , opinions . There are lots of very knowledgeable people here , would put our collective abilities up against any other group . Amazing what can be learned here , let us keep it that way . Thanks .

I fully endorse this thread, Dusty.  But all fishermen know you must bait while they are biting.  Problem is, they're always biting around here

Uh , both of you linguists must have read that work of fiction that claimed the quote had anything to do with jelly donuts . Which is actually funny , but untrue  Of course ich bin ein Hamburger is only weird translated into English

And ironically, "Ich bin ein Berliner" is funny for a Hamburger, but not for a Berliner
They have a different word for jelly doughnuts. Now everybody is confused!

Thanks!  Still here Dave...was out of the country for a couple weeks in sunny Mexico, just back last week.  Was hoping to get some slightly less chillier weather to get a ride in down to Galveston...perhaps next weekend if you are around.  I need another lesson on how to hold a taco!  :)  Quite pleased with my Packer team...all the Skansin relatives are quite happy for the moment...but to be fair, I don't think they can win the Superbowl (Super Tazon in Spanish) this year.

Not a single "work of fiction" so much as a fun urban/intellectual myth so to speak. Half a thought shows his grammar to have been true but the myth is fun to chew. Then, of course, there was his accent... priceless.

I, myself, am not a jelly donut, nor am I either a frankfurter or a hamburger for that matter.
