Watching a local station as a tornado forms in North Tulsa . The meteorologist on camera is outside getting a visual on the funnel and he is incredibly excited . These folks love their work .

Dusty,

Yes they do.  Around here, the hurricane season is by far their favorite.  Models and tracking from African thunderstorms all the way across the Atlantic, into the Gulf of Mexico and then...WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE....(kidding, mostly).  Seriously though during the peak hurricane years (Katrina, Rita, Ike) they earned their keep with very accurate predictions and updates and long hours.

We don't get your tornadoes, they are pretty rare here for some reason, but not unknown.

Fascinating stuff, I wanted to be a meteorologist in high school until I found out most were employed by the military at that time.  And it takes a doctorate to do much.  I wonder often just where storms spawn, and why fronts form, etc.  Someone said the "mother of all low pressure systems" is in the Bering Sea between AK and Siberia.

Anyway, a favorite topic.  I hope the next cold front blows away the biting midges.  They are horrendous right now.  Ms LD says they explode every year at this time.  Hope they all blow away...

When I was Duluth Richard "Heatwave" Berler was the best. Young fellow, very nervous on camera, the complete opposite of your typical blond weather person.

He was GOOD.

Used to work with atmospheric physics folks at White Sands.  Predicted weather for our high power laser tests.  They were really, really good.  Taught me a lot too while we were planning tests.

One had an original Ford Torino, IIRC a 390 engine.  His partner was younger and took his 30 day vacation every tornado season to go chase storms.  That was back in the 80's.  They both did a lot of work in the model developments that are pretty common today.  Their advantage was that the atmosphere above the missile range had more data taken than most places in the world so they could develop a model and then test it's accuracy often.

Weather men?

Whither weather whether wet or whether windy.

Where to whet one's wether whimsy.
Tan her up and dress her flimsy.

Ratings are a slippin', whip a wench up on the ether.
Last summer she's a floozy, we found her on Ibiza.

Make her hot and make her snarky
The sports guy, his schtick is malarky.

As long as curves are in demand
and blonde hair to the shoulder flows.

No need to be a weather man
To know which way the wind blows.

Anyhow.... Sorry Mr Zimmerman.

Weather...the only topic that really only needs a minute to actually talk about, but can indeed stretch into at least an hour conversation over a cup of coffee...at least when visiting with family.

Listened in on a one hour debate about the weather in the cafe de Cedar Vale a few years back , broken up by the occasional comment re the humorous happenings at a local welding shop . The
boys did seem to agree that rain was needed , although there was some disagreement as to how
much or if said precipitation would be more beneficial before or after the end of April

Kansan's tend to do the same thing. Below is some videos from the 1990 tornado that pretty much destroyed Hesston, KS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdm1WukDlWo

The amazing thing was that their was only one death (and that was out of town) and 14 injuries. Yep, this is the same town that just went through the mass shooting at the lawn mower factory.

In my book, they're barely one step above a lawyer (defense).  "For tomorrow....Partly to mostly sunny with clouds, chance of rain and wind, temps low of 32* with flurries and a high of 80*.  Isolated tornadoes or hurricanes possible".

I'm going to the Guzzi rally regardless...

Speaking of meteorologists who love their work, THIS is a weather report:

And some Dread Zeppelin. Because Blues-Rock-Reggae-Elvis-Heavy Metal fusion.

Then again, when I was watching Predator I didn't think two members of its cast would become governors, either. So you never know.
