Is there gonna be a test ?
« on: November 11, 2017, 11:54:51 AM »
 All of the threads re spelling , pronunciation , etiquette , etc are making me curious . Is there going to be a test later ?  :rolleyes: Are we gonna start diagramming sentences , and what about observing etiquette ? What century's norms do we observe ? What culture ?

 From an old English book on etiquette

It really bothers me when someone uses "gonna" instead of "going to".

Maybe, but like Klaus, I really don't see anything bad about a discussion of language and its usage.

 Now I'm confused , wasn't Klaus stating he had no problem with someone spitting food into a corner?

I see it like this, if you are that anal retentive, you should stick to books not forums. I shouldn't have to go to english class just to respond on a forum.

I know my spelling is crap so I'm not going to pillory others for theirs but I do draw the line at 'Text Speak' spelling which should be an offence punishable by public flogging. Hypocrite? Moi? :grin:

If you want to get technical...I see the word 'your' used when it should be 'you're' all the time here.  Not that my wording is any where perfect.  Since when is a forum filled with bikers speaking going to be graded on their spelling, grammer prowess here ?   I was taught to spell phonetically.  Shortly there after then phonics was dropped from teaching in the US schools.  If you graduated after 1961 from high school unlike me you probably weren't taught phonics. Your loss.  :sad:

I'm so old now I don't even remember what noun, verb, pronoun, adjective, etc. even means any more.  But I think it's already built into my sentence structure most the time from habit.

Dusty:

You wrote:

“All of the threads re spelling , pronunciation , etiquette , etc are making me curious.”

You need a period after “etc” since “etc” is an abbreviation of the Latin “et cetera.”

You also need a conma after the period because you placed “etc.” in the middle of a sentence.

I also note you placed extraneous spaces in front of all three commas you used, as well
as the period.
Accentuate the positive;
Eliminate the negative;
Latch on to the affirmative;
