Being out in the environment and not in a cage, riders are very aware of our senses, especially the sense of SMELL. Here in South Central, if you ride in a certain area, you can smell...
Twizlers (red licorice) A manufacturing plant in west Lancaster puts out the sweet smell. I've smelled it 12 miles away!
Kelloggs Corn Flakes -A manufacturing plant in north west Lancaster puts out the fresh corn flake aroma. Makes me want to stop for milk!
In York County, You can smell Potato Chips at various location and Stauffers chocolate cookies at another location.
Any good aromas in your region?
-
Lots of new mown hay in the right time of year. Go south into Arkansas you get the wonderful aroma of poultry farms :thumb:
-
Here in the spring, there are many varieties of night blooming wildflowers. Honeysuckle, jasmine, more I cannot name. Further south we have the beginning of the Piney Woods. Nice natural scents.
-
There is a tannery across town. I would call the smell" memorable", "not good" but it comes nowhere near what it was in the '60s. I'm trying to think of a good smell around here with the dairy and hog producers as well as the pet food factory, I'm coming up short unless you count the mayfly hatch that smells sort of like fish. Nope, not many good smells from here

Pizza ?
Seriously , like Shorty said , all kinds of wonderful smells in Eastern OK , the dogwood tree in bloom are nice .

Just a 1/4 mile outside the City Limits south of Traverse City is the Saralee Baking Company. A jaunt through town with the right breeze and it's Cherry Pie :)
established as Chef Pierre was bought out by SL about twenty-five years ago.
a ride through the tunnel of trees (maples) at the right time of year and it's sweet maple in the air or a ride along Lake Michigan in a spring rain....has it's own smell...in a very good way
-
low tide, and the B&M Baked Beans factory nearby.
-
Cilantro and green onions in the fields.
Citrus in bloom.
The Pacific.
When I worked at HFT hq. in Calabasas, the Cheesecake Factory had their test/factory kitchen next door. That was amazing at times.
Then again, sulfur springs and the oil patch add a little, - balance.

Tones spice factory in Ankeny IA, nice aroma.

Where I live now. The Pacific ocean, Girls in cut off shorts wearing Hawaiian Tropic (while Im stopped at the lights), extremely good coffee.

I used to live just east of a KRAFT factory in Springfield, Mo. on Thursday the entire neighborhood smelled like the cheese powder that comes in the blue box of mac & cheese. An invigorating scent indeed.

Three things come to mind. In the early morning and the right time of year are clover fields and fresh cut alfalfa fields. Third was in the industrial district of Denver going by a huge indoor marijuana growing facility, guessing it to be a facility of 50,000+ ft.

I had one and it really was pretty awful. I was always scared it would go bang and I would have to fix it. Too complicated. I sold it to a young Russian guy when you couldn't give them away and I thought I was lucky to get rid of it.A good RGV is a lot more fun.

These lil cigars I smoke, Captain Black Sweets, taste good too!!

When I lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas I was a half mile south of the local Campbell Soup Factory. You could always tell what the soup de jour was.
Around Texas I like the smell of wild onions cut by lawnmowers. The smell of the ocean as you approach a coast. A BBQ joint. And I really like that fetid smell of the bayous—always love crossing over a swamp bridge.
Around Colorado and New Mexico, nothing beats the smell of green chilis being roasted.

When I lived in San Diego, I used to enjoy just taking a leisurely ride through some of the ethnic neighborhoods and smelling the food. Ethiopian, Somali, Mexican, Vietnamese, a good barbecue place, some others.
Now I live in NH, and fall smells nice, winter smells crisp, maple sugar weekend smells amazing.

Freshly mown hay or grass (though not as much this time of year)
Salt air from the nearby water
Smoke from my fireplace as I ride home
Grilling meat as I ride home
First cup of coffee in the morning

I go 20 miles west to Bisbee Arizona for some interesting smells...There are a couple of coffee roasters in downtown old bisbee that put out a wonderful smell. Reminds me of when my Cuban grandmother used to roast coffee beans on the stove in a big cast iron pan, always turning the beans with an old wooden spoon, to roast them evenly.
The smell of creosote bushes in the sonoran desert after a summer rain is like nothing else.
Bisbee is also known as one of the last "Hippie Havens" in the USA. You can sit on a bench in the park in historic downtown Bisbee, and smell the dank , and somewhat pleasant odor of cannabis being smoked, on a regular basis.
Brings me back to the 70's! :thumb:

The smell of freshly brewed Espresso Coffee in the morning
Especially after a few beers the night before with Huzo at the Blue Duck Inn on the Alpine Way

Here in Lancaster County PA I live in an area mostly populated with Amish. The most diSTINKt oder in the air is that smell of manure from the local farms. I was out for a ride the other day and my nostrils were getting polluted with this horrible aroma. When I returned home and opened the garage door I was greeted with one of my favorite smells. It was the pleasant aroma of my lovely wife baking Christmas cookies.

The smell of dead kangaroos while travelling up to Wangaratta with Huzo and Paul Brooking.

The bad news is Wyno, that I had a vindaloo at the Indian restaurant the night before...
I wouldn't lay the entire blame at the (dead) feet of the Kangaroo carcass..!

years ago I could smell Castol R 10 miles away from Cadwell park race track.

The company I work for does a lot of work with local food and beverage manufacturers in and around cental PA. Some plants smell good others not so good and other not at all.
It always neat to get into the plants ang see the machinery and process (bulk raw to final package) that make the goods. Its like "How its made" on a very intimate level.
-
If the timing is right, the King's Hawaiian factory just up the road has a wonderful aroma. I make it a point to ride by there regularly. Sometimes it just smells like north Georgia, other times it's bliss.
-
In the fall when the local wineries are harvesting and pressing grapes... the whole area smells like grape juice. It's a pleasant, but short phenomenon, it's here and gone in just a couple days.
While I've never experienced it on a motorcycle, for the obvious reason, in late February, early March when they're boiling maple syrup... that smell just lingers in the air. Dang it, now I want pancakes!

The smell of cheap perfume the hookers wear at the local rest area and truck stop.

QUOTE: What smells good in your area?
Many things, depending on the seasons, but in general, it is the AIR!
We have some of the highest quality and cleanest air in the USA! :thumb:

Just... the air. Pine and spruce and the river behind the house. The way the smell changes as the season progress, and different berries ripen and rot. Nothing smells quite like living in the woods.

My daughter went to art school in Milwaukee,in the warehouse district. The brewery's and heavy fog off Lake Michigan combined to produce what she termed, burning wet dog!!!
-
Nut'n better then the sweet smell of orange blossoms, a real nose treat! :thumb:
Soon the groves will be in full bloom, should last thru February. That's when we ride through the groves and bring home a fresh picked supply of those round orange juice containers ready for squeez'n.

Gotto cover up the smell of stagnant menthol cigarettes smoke and bottom shelf vodka some how.

Around Tucson some of the Mexican restaurants have a great smell of hot oil, chilis and cooking meat. Wet desert has a distinctive smell. In the spring I have the smell of Roses, Lantanas, jasmine and Orange blossoms, kind of like walking by the perfume counter.

Here in The Arkansas Ozarks, all we can smell is pig shit and the newklar plant.
Y'all stay away. nothing to see here.

The smell of manure/fertilizer from the many farms....the smell of road kill as I ride past...blooming locust trees, hillbillys smoking weed on their front porch.....
-
Yep, nothing like coming around the next curve entering the dead skunk area, only to be repeated another mile down the road.
-
Cheerios here, too. Smells great.
-
Is that the smell you got with the old 2 stroke dirt bikes??? I love that smell!
Not just 2 Strokes the old 4 Strokes used it but it was hard work every thing had to be drained and cleaned between race meetings and could not be mixed with any thing else. I tried it in my TY 175 and it seized up.

I remember a trip many years ago in the Gatlinburg tn. area.. vanilla at night when it was really calm. I don't ride at night any more, but if I did, I'd do that one again..

One of my favorite riding memories was made long ago during a ride in California. My wife and I were cruising along Old Stage Road between LaHonda and Pescadero. A wonderful road, and the weather was perfect. The scent of the Eucalyptus trees was unforgettable. I guess it's considered an invasive species in CA, but they had a unique scent, not unpleasant at all.

Many years ago when I used to fly the mail from Anacortes out to the San Juan islands. During certain times of the year the air would be soft and still. I would take off on my first run about dawn and as I broke ground and turned towards the islands there would be the smell of the town waking up. Coffee, bacon, eggs, toast and pancakes. Wood fire smoke from chimneys, a little oak, some fir, ugh someone is burning hemlock. Diesel from trucks and boats. The unmistakable sea air as I headed to the islands, which had their own particular morning scent.
After the morning mail runs I would take the company van into Friday Harbor and have a quiet breakfast. The smell of the salt air, coffee and hot fresh cinnamon rolls is unforgettable.
Nowdays I can't smell a thing. Except the fragrance of my wifes hair, for some reason I can still smell that.
-
Like Rick from WNY said, the smell of grapes in the fall. For about 10 years I would ride from Massahusetts to Chicago in the third week of September. As I-90 hung a left to get around Lake Eire, the smell of grapes hit me every time. I remembered that smell into the winter as a highlight of the ride.
-
years ago I could smell Castol R 10 miles away from Cadwell park race track.
Now THAT I can relate to.
In the old days of 7R's, Manx Nortons and G50's we always checked the wind direction at the race track and made sure we were down wind. :thumb:

There is a local well known bakery in my hometown, simply known as Paul's. It is located at the crest of Lee's Hill on Lafayette Blvd. a major commuter route in the mornings and on my route as well. (Lee's Hill is named in memory of Robert E. Lee who was positioned on the top during the battle of Fredericksburg, that resulted in devastating defeat for the Union forces. Lafayette Blvd. for Marquis De Lafayette who was a frequent visitor to our fair city via George Washington whose boyhood home is directly across the road my abode. Tons of history here for a small area.)
Paul's is famous for their homemade donuts and bread. As you crest the hill the smell of baking permeates the early morning air, most of the cars don't have the pleasure of the fragrance with their windows up, but on a bike you can get the full effect. Must be the former cop in me that really looks forward to the smell of donuts in the fryer.......

In North Queensland at the moment. Outside where we are staying there are numerous frangiapani trees. The smell of the tropics....

Back in the 1960's I lived 5 miles east of Akron, Ohio, then the tire capital of the world. Ah....the smell of burning rubber.....
For a few years in the 1980's I lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; walked past the Quaker Oats plant on my way to work each day. Smelled better than burning rubber, but not that much better.

Not so much any more, but at a flat track event, the smell of castor oil - "smells like a race"
-
Orange blossoms and apple trees are my favorite smells on a motorcycle. I ride occasionally along the Venosta Valley from Meran to the north end of Stelvio Pass in Italy. The traffic is awful on that particular road, but the smell of apples is often marvelous.
The smell of burned castor oil and AVGAS are both wonderful too, for a motorhead.

Waldheim is UP for me!! Love a good crawfish boil! Other smells around New Orleans are roasting coffee, gardenias, and sweet olive bushes in bloom. The smell of the bagasse is truly unique. I am surprised how often I smell pot smoke... perhaps I shouldn't be surprised...

There must be a joke here that I don't get. Assume it has to do with Bimbo?
BTW- You know that Bimbo has bought out most of the US bakeries? Apparently only Mexican companies are only willing to take a risk on something as mundane as food. I remember when some Wall Street guys nearly put Hostess under when you couldn't buy cupcakes or Twinkies for months.
