'98 V11EV Piston Rings

(1/1)

n3303j:

I bought rings for my V11 from a reputable Moto Guzzi supplier.
They carry the Freccia brand. No clue as to country of origin as they are marked Extra-EU. Which I was lead to believe meant anyone not in the EU Group.

The original compression ring is a straight rectangular profile.
The Freccia ring has a slight chamfer on both the top and bottom outboard edges. This reduces the total ring contact surface area which I assume will make the ring wear a bit more quickly.
The photo shows the Freccia ring left and stock ring right.
All the other dimensions are within .0001" of identical.
The Freccia box is marked as a BMW Part. Guess the R100 uses the same rings.

Should I be disturbed by this difference? Anyone else using these rings with no surprises?

Ron, I am not familiar with those rings, but from what you state/have measured, it looks like they will fit. Do you do anything special to prepare the nikasil bore for the new rings?
Rick.

After reading a bunch of Nikasil recommendations I found the general
consensus was to clean the bores and scuff with Red Scotch Brite. Seems that Nikasil is porous enough to hold oil without heavy cross hatching. I wrapped my 3 stone hone with the red Scotch Brite and ran it through the bore at a speed that produced 45° crosshatched lines.

Did similar when I re-ringed a BMW R100RT I used to own. That one broke in well and held compression and was frugal on oil usage. Evidently the rings are the same as the box was marked BMW Dia 92.00.

Only thing that surprised me was that this was the first set of purchased rings that I had to file the gaps on (scraper & oil). Every other time I've purchased rings (OEM) they were gapped correctly out of the package.

Last I looked MG Cycle was selling the same brand rings.
But who knows what's in the supply chain now?
