Ear Cannon Horn Relay
« on: September 01, 2015, 03:22:22 PM »
Hi All,
I'm thinking of getting this LOUD horn:

http://www.aerostich.com/ear-cannon-air-horn.html

They do have a wiring harness that includes a relay. My question to the group is would the existing horn relay  (07 Vintage) suffice for this horn? I've got a pair of Fiamms on there now...alot beefier than the originals and they seem to do fine.

Thx

If the relay you have now was added for the Fiams, I would say probably OK. If you're refering to the relay that comes on the bike, I would run the current hot lead to a new relay, used as a trigger lead, a new hot wire to the relay from the battery, with a fuse near the battery, and let that be the supply for the horn. That will keep a lot of juice out of the horn button therby lengthening the life of the horn switch. Otherwise, you're running a lot of current through the switch and inviting failure.

Doing it like John Henry said will also let you run a much heavier wire from the battery to the relay and thence to the horn.  Then you'll actually get all the LOUD you are expecting.  Otherwise you are not giving the horn the electrons it needs to meet your expectations.

:1: Don't rely on the Guzzi horn relay, Luigi is trying to save money by using spaghetti instead of real wires, The pair of Fiaams I added to my EV are much louder since I removed them from the Guzzi relay and feed a new relay direct from the battery.

You may want to consider the horn you are buying- not such great reports from Webbikeworld:
http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-horns/denali-soundbomb-horn-review/

This review is the latest and greatest. However- you can see their reviews of other horns.

Read through the review and you'll see some helpful info- even a link to a relay/ harness for only $13

The Fiamm horns also need to be attached using the included bracket, so that they can 'vibrate' in the bracket. They are much quieter if mounted too rigid.

I have a pair of Fiamms on my Stelvio, and I had to add a relay and separate power line because the Stelvio has no relay. I also have them on my EV, using the factory EV relay. They sound the same to me.

Thanks Boat for the links...maybe That SoundBomb would be a better choice.

Yeah Chuck you're probably right...I'm just all packed up now for the last (long) ride of the season and don't want to start that right yet...especially without thinking through the mounting position of this monster!

I'm mounting an extra standard equipment Ducati horn on my 1100 ev but I don't know which relay is the horn relay.  Diagrams I am looking at don't seem to show the relays.

I have a STEIBLE Nautilus "Air Cannon" on my 2014 Victory Vision.  It is great and comes with its own relay.

I cut a rectangular piece of wood the same overall size as my Nautilus Compact air horn before I bought it. Then I checked that the place I wanted to install it would hold the piece of wood. Everything worked out fine. The horn is under the gas tank of my T3, wedged inside the frame bracing for the steering head.

Big wires and relays are fine, but some of mine are too big. You can find online calculators for wire sizes for given voltage drops and run lengths. But if you ask Kiwi Roy for a recommendation it will probably be just right.

If this truly is an air horn you only need power enough to run the air compressor. I think the advert called for 20 Amps.
It would also not depend on a flexible mounting to make it louder.
