A good project for winter boredom!
« on: January 07, 2022, 10:00:59 AM »
A couple nights ago, simply out of boredom, I decided to entertain myself with a project  that could be of a constructive nature.
I got our my met-wrench tools, rolling stool, a hot cup of Joe  and cranked up some 80’s rock hits.
My goal was to see how many fasteners I found on my 02 Stone that were not tightened to acceptable specs.

I found 3 that were totally too lose and were about to be lost or cause problems and several others that accepted a more appropriate torque spec that they were presently at.
If any of you folks find yourselves in a bored status try this procedure and report back. You may even prevent a further failure from occurring with your bike👍

Did you add a dab of loctite or anti seize where appropriate?

No I did not but that’s a great response that I will try to remember for next time! The fact I found the ones lose that I did would indicate that there are vibrations at those areas of the machine and loctite is appropriate. Thanks Cam👍

Oh come on Dan, that's too easy.
Try that on an ironhead Harley.
You'll be asking yourself, "There must be ONE tight one someplace"
And then you'll look up outside and it will be 80 degrees and sunny

After a year of seeing oil spots under my R69, I finally laid down to check it out.
All the oil pan bolt easily turned a quarter before beginning to snug up.
I do believe I might have fixed the problem.

Maybe this confirms there’s some validity to my suggestion 🤔
One of my loose fasteners was a handlebar bolt!

Y'ep.  The metric molecules are smaller and only work on metric bolts.

If you need more to do, then you could detail and polish the beast.
Get a tooth brush, some ice cream sticks (both sizes), etc.

Since the weather turned cold I was getting cabin fever. I decided to paint the marred paint on the drier and also cleaned my textile jacket.

The instructions are to hand wash, BTDT. So I threw caution to the wind, stripped out the armor and put it in the washer on delicate wash, cold water. Took it out and dried it on a hanger in front of the fireplace. I was surprised that it was mostly dry in a couple of hours. The jacket looks clean, despite some UV fade, more brown/purple than black. Hopefully the jacket is still water resistant.

I might give the mesh jackets and leather jackets a try next.

My winter boredom project has been tearing out the old wooden shelf unti I had next to my workbench, the chip board shelves had sagged and in one case cracked.

I found a store selling used warehouse shelving and racking, 49" wide, 32" deep amd 8' high with 8 shelves, all lock fit no fateners and powder coated for under $400. Had to move the bench over a bit and remount all the steel peg board and sort out tool placement.

I once worked on a 3 cylinder Zekeley (sp?) manufactured in Holland Michigan. I left before the engine was finished. It wasn't a high quality engine.  I don't know why the boss even took it in. There were two of them, hopefully we could make a running one out of the two.

^^^^^It's an ultralight called a "Legal Eagle." Very open cockpit  and will cruise around 60 mph. It's a bugs in your teeth flying motorcycle, really. When the pandemic hit, I thought I'd need *something to do* for at least a year. It has been that.  :boozing:
The wings are spruce and 1/32" birch plywood with 1/8" birch ply spar webbing. Fuselage is .035" wall 4130 tubing. Every piece is fabricated.
I took the aluminum tail off so I didn't have to walk around it while fitting up the wings and struts in this picture.

Still need to mount the engine, design and build fuel and oil tanks, and all the myriad little things  and cover. It's been an absorbing project, something to think about, and *something to do."

Oh, forgot. Guzzi content. I seriously considered using an inverted small block with a dry sump lubrication system, but it wouldn't make enough horsepower at 3500 rpm, the practical max for a propeller. I *have* a reduction drive from the Aero engine, but the small block and drive are too heavy for this airplane. All up weight has to be 254 lbs. or less for it to be considered an "ultralight," which the FAA considers not to be an airplane, so there are no restrictions, required inspections, licensing, etc. Just sit down, push the starter button, and roar around at 300-500 feet with that sweet little Verner put putting along burning 2 gallons per hour of automotive gas.
