G5 & Convert 22 mm replacement handlebars
« on: May 05, 2019, 09:13:31 PM »
As I get all the final bits together to start moving the G5 along, and off the work bench, I realize now that the slight bend that I noticed earlier in the left side of the civilian bars on the bike is worse than I originally thought .

I had a deal lined up for a stock replacement Convert bar, but it fell through because it was the much higher police model bar with the cross bar, twice as high as the standard bar, I don't think it will work with the new standard length Clutch & ft brake lines that I've already got.

I recall what a pita it was to find a true 22mm OD bar for the CX100, but I'm glad I took the trouble to locate a 22 mm Rizoma bar because the soft aluminum Brembo ft brake m/c mount was already showing signs of stress cracks, glad I didn't have to tempt fate and mcgyver a 7/8" bar to fit.

I'll be doing leg work on it looking for bars, but I'm curious if anyone has solved the riddle already and knows of an aftermarket 22 mm bar with a matching/close sizing and shape to the stock civilian bar on a G5 or Convert.

I'd even welcome info on 7/8" bars that matched in size and profile with the stock bars that you've used successfully, to give me a better idea of what I'm looking for.

When I first put my Convert back on the road two years ago, I was using a pair of 7/8" Emgo handlebars. I experienced zero issues using them, but ultimately decided to switch back to the stock handlebars.

I have a "weathered" set of original T3 'bars I'll give you (just pay shipping).
MG Cycle has new ones:

Harper's does as well:

7/8 is only 0.0089 inches bigger than 22mm -- less than 1/100th of an inch. It's hard to imagine that would make any practical difference.

Moto

calculation: (7/8) - (22/25.4) = 0.0089 inches difference

Hey Charlie,     Wow, that was solved quickly, I didn't know they were still available.

     You've helped me out so much already, I don't want to take advantage of your good nature, if the bars are something that you'd like to keep around in case you needed them in the future, no problem at all, I'll order the ones from Harpers;

But if the bars are collecting dust and you don't mind moving them on, "weathered" doesn't bother me one bit, it will match the well worn patina style of the bike, lol.

      I'll pm you.

      tks very much

Hey Moto, I agree with you , no argument here; but when I read the caution in guzziology about cracking the old style Brembo m/c clamps, and saw evidence of stress cracks already forming on my old Brembo clamps just from age and use, I wanted to do what I could, to prevent that cracking from becoming a break in the future, fwiw

Hey Charlie hold off on sending me those bars, I'll be doing an order to Harpers and I'll get them to throw the bars in with it, tks very much for the kind offer and solving this so quickly for me.

Tks
