Title: Centauro oil pump
Post by: dxhall on September 10, 2016, 09:12:07 PM
I picked up the Centauro this afternoon.  It hasn't run for a couple years, so it will need a few things before I can start it.  What was the problem with the stock oil pump?  What was the fix?

The pump has no bearing in it. Some run just fine. I switched mine out at 18,000 miles with a stock pump ( oil light would flicker at idle. ) My pump had a very slight wobble in it. Keep an eye on the oil light and enjoy!

... had a very slight wobble...

which leads to this with the remarkably light-weight aluminum gear:

(taken from my Daytona)

I replaced the pump and the gears with the chain from an EV.  Not stock, but reliable.

Welcome to the guzzi of the crazies. Check out the Centauro owners group forum. Not a lot of current activity but a great archive of advice.

DK, which pump? I have a set of chains from my 1000S, wonder if they would work?

As you read this, having the following completed on...."Il Cavallo Giallo" (aka The Yellow Horse, my '98 Centauro GT)

NOTE:  I have 8000 original miles on it.  I put 1500 miles on it since I bought it...the only other thing I need to fix is the POS Veglia Borletti electonic tach which DIED after 1500 miles...  Looking for a replacement OEM now....

* Steel timing gear (replacing aluminum one)
* Steel oil pump gear (replacing aluminum one with brass roller bushing)
* Will Creedon chip
* New OEM belts (A must if it has been sitting for a long time!)
* All new engine / head / valve gaskets
* Oil / filter change

Will file a report when completed... :1: :cool:

The oil pump in and of itself does not fail. Rather, it's the aluminum gear train teeth that erode and then break. If you take notice of the erosion, when replacing the timing belts, and replace the gear train, you'll likely not have a so-called pump failure. A friends Centauro lost it's oil pressure. By the time (seconds - a moment) you see the oil light go on it's already too late. As best a few of us can determine it WILL happen between ~20K and 35K miles. Daytonas', of course are at the same risk. The friend is in CA (Centauro). I feel very, very fortunate that he warned me. I piggy backed my parts order (from England), w/his, early this year. My Daytona is its typical raw, sweet, grin, laugh in the helmet self, since the change over. Ping me if you like for contact information. The complete kit includes a hardened steel gear set, a complete, brand new oil pump, woodruff key and bolts. You will add the gaskets. All of it manufactured to a higher standard.
BTW: The front big end bearing failed, as did the front crank journal.  Good fortune,  R3~

Did you get the steel gear and pump from Joe Caruso?

I've been speaking to him just the other day, and he asked me to pass his details to anybody who would like more information.

Joe is in England and is incredibly helpful.

His mod is not cheap so if you want a low cost solution you'd be better going the chain route.

That said if I still had or ever have a 4V engine, he would/will be one the first people I talk to.

If anybody wants his email, just ping me, I don't like putting up his mail on a public forum

Yes Jock, please provide Joe's contact. My Daytona has 5800 miles so best start thinking about it. Belts replaced last year at 5200 miles (yes, I know, that's only 50 miles a month) and all was fine then.

I also purchased the replacement parts for my Daytona's oil pump and drive gears from Joe Caruso.
Joe is first class all the way!  R3~

I've contacted Joe and put a deposit on a pump and pump gear.  If you need a set, you should contact him sooner rather than later.  His lead time can be pretty long.

That's sound about what I paid, (convert from Pounds to USD) + shipping.  No regrets...peace of mind...cheap insurance...improve d reliability (IMHO)...all well worth it! :thumb: :1:

All the upgrade work is now completed on my "98 Centauro GT (aka "The Yellow Horse"), so I need to get down to Mesa / Tom Hull and pick it up this week or next week.  Will file a Ride Report after my 2 hour / 105 mile journey back to Red Rock country. :cool:

The gentleman that bought my Centauro installed all of the Joe Caruso parts as well.
