Being a new Guzzi owner, I keep seeing the term "big block" referenced. I know what a big block is but where does that fit in within the Guzzi lineup?

Two basic 'Families' of the V Twin engine. Big block first appeared in 1967. Small block in about '77.

The developments and evolution of both have followed very different paths but maintain a 'Separate' lineage.

It's just bigger cylinders and new heads on the familiar old small block.

No. Like the new v9 is to the V7, the 1400 is basically bigger pistons and cylinders bolted onto the 1200 8v.

Guzzi has two blocks. Two engine families. Big and Small. That's it. Simple, actually.

The BB uses a sump bolted to the one piece case. The crank is inserted from the rear of the case. The SB has split cases that allows the crank to be set into one half and the other half of the case is then bolted to the other.
