On the jar of its cousin, "Marmite", it has the full story, which is ....

"Spread VERY thinly".

Vegemite is for beginners Marmite is the real stuff.

As Huzo says don't slather it on just enough to cover the tip of your knife fingernail size on toast too much and its horrible.

You can live on that stuff

I've noticed that North Americans tend to be generous with their toast toppings. Don't do that with vegemite - or its relatives. The thinnest smear is sufficient. And this time of year for you guys, a toasted cheese & vegemite sandwich is recommended. Also a small teaspoon of it in a mug of hot water - it's not miso soup, but sort of similar.

Vegemite is Australian. As Kiwi Roy says, it's for beginners.

Marmite is NZ made, and that is the REAL stuff.

When I am on a road trip I always have lunch at a location where I can enjoy the scenery. Lunch is often fresh bread rolls purchased that morning, marg (as it needs no refrigeration), Marmite (spread thinly ) and processed cheese slices which are individually wrapped in plastic and need not be refrigerated.

Both are made from a yeast extract. I think Marmite is from the leftover yeast from the brewing industry. Both are an acquired taste. Years ago, when mothers made the trip to England to visit their kids on their big O.E. they often carried caseloads of Marmite over as the English equivalent was just not the same.

I still use a recipe for a fish pattie that my long departed mother came up with to use cooked fish when the family holiday had no power and no fridge.

These are yummie in their own right, but like robebop's poached egg idea, on top of a slice f fresh white bread, a bit of butter or marg and a thin spread of Marmite they are just magic.   :food:

Yup, there's a good reason why Vegemite/Marmite doesn't go bad, ever.

It's because it's already gone bad twice, being the waste product of an organism that feeds on decay.   There's no place else for it to "go rotten" to ....

Wish I was told to spread it thin when I was in new Zealand ( tried both). I spread it on like it was Notella. Two versions of what I imagine salted compost would taste like.

I grew up on a joint US/Australian Air Force base in the '70's.

It was a rite of passage to greet each new US family with a jar of Vegemite and NOT tell them that "less is More"

The facial expressions when they slathered it on and ate it like Peanut Butter and Jelly was priceless.

That said I know of quite a few Yanks who developed a taste for it and still consume.

For the record ... fresh bread (preferably Sour dough) fresh butter and a scrape of Vegemite is heaven on a plate.

Vegemite for beginners
1) Cut a slice of bread in half
2) Spread butter on one half, Vegemite on the other.
3) Bring the halves together and eat.

Non Aussies and Kiwis might like to reduce the butter content of this sandwich, over the course of their long and healthy lives, in order to experience the undiluted goodness of the real thing

When it comes to strange tastes and Americans

I still get a lot of grief from US friends regarding their exposure to the "Green Death"

Most South Australians and a few Queenslanders (who remember the great XXXX Beer strike of the 1970's) would concur

Love it, brought up on it.
Spread thinly, really no way.
I love to get a chunk or blob and leave it on the back of my tounge and let it melt.
Acquired taste yes.
