Gauge Parts
« on: February 25, 2019, 11:50:11 AM »
I have been putting off fixing the Tachometer on my old loop because the bezzels are crimped so tight the metal cracks & snaps when I try to un-crimp it, however the other day the speedo needle broke and must have fallen out the hole where the bulb is supposed to be and so is lost.
So now I need a pointer and two bezzels.
It would also help if I could find a schematic of the Tachometer, one of the components burnt up and I can't identify what it was.

Does anyone have a source of parts or an old tach/speedo they can spare.
Thanks
Roy

BTW other than the main shaft bearing being a little sloppy the speedometer components still look quite serviceable at 139,000 miles, not bad for a Veglia.

Hi Don,

Roy found out that Oliver doesn't repair Veglia's anymore.   I must have done him in with my Tach repair!

Pretty sure I have a needle for you, Euro Trash gas the bezels. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Veglia-80mm-Tachometer-Bezel-Repair-Kit-Ducati-Moto-Guzzi-Morini-Laverda-CHROME/163535986741?hash=item2613812035:g:mqsAAOSwg3FUq~em:rk:26:pf:0

I tried fixing a loop tach before with no luck. There is a metal weight that sits between plastic plates, the eray cast zinc plate expands with age and brakes and often brakes the plastic as well.

I bought a couple used tachs over the years for my Eldorado but they all failed in time. I then bought a repro eldo tach from Spain on Ebay, it works but it reads half speed, ie, indicates 2000 rpm when its actually 4000 rpm. Seller could not explain why this is so, I just live with it, it looks just like a stock Veglia gauge.

This seller also has V7 Sport gauge sets but the needles are not the 'fat' Sport style

Send me a pm if you want a tach needle and I will put it in the mail for you,

Cheers

Jim

The difference is between the carburetor and injected bikes.  I found this out when I was supplied a replacement tach for a 1997 (before the Anniversary) Cali 1100.  I can't remember which one on which bike goes half or twice reading.

Having said that, I'm not aware of any injected Eldorados until the 1400.

Hi Jim,
Most of the old simple Tachs worked with a charge pump, a capacitor is charged up and transfers its energy every time the points open,The reason your Tach is reading half, it's set up for a different ignition system that normally puts out double the pulses per revolution.
For example a two stroke single that fires once per rev. rather than a 4 stoke single that fires every second revolution.
Do you by chance have it on a two cylinder engine that has two separate coils? (one pulse per coil every two revolutions)
They often have a switch to select the No of pulses but I'm sure you are aware of that.

Thank you for the kind offer of a needle, I will send you a PM

Thank-you Gentlemen,
I have ordered a pair of bezels
One thing remains, I'm trying to identify the item in the picture, a small round disc with 2 leads attached
The cover has cracked and fallen off, I think it may be a capacitor but all the others are oblong in shape.
If someone has a board in there junk would they please take a look and tell me the colour bands starting from the top and any other marking.

I assume no-one has a schematic?
Thanks
Roy

I figured out that the mystery part is a thermistor measured about 300 Ohms at body temperature, because the coating has flaked off over the years I cannot identify it but it's still working so never mind.
I sketched out the schematic to the best of my ability, others may find it useful.

The meter wouldn't work until I replaced some of the active components, I guess they became a bit lazy over the last 47 years.
It seems ok now, the new bezel will spruce it up and I have the test equipment to calibrate it.

BTW if you don't have a signal generator it should be possible to knock up a crude one using 60 cycles AC which will

simulate 3,600 revs for a 2 cylinder or 7,200 for a single.

I made a sketch of the circuit, with scope traces, if any-ones interested send me a PM with e-mail address.
