I do get frustrated by highway speeds (seemingly) designed for the lowest-common-denominator of driving skill.

Slow or fast, being predictable to other drivers and expecting their inattention, etc., seems to be key.

And yet....if going faster slows time.....

That's we all look so young!

Speed limits are set for tractor trailer rigs.  Modified based on numbers of accidents in the area (or complaints from locals).

Yes, speed signs for curves are set for tractor/trailer rigs.   Don't know about your other claim.

When Carter was President it was to save oil consumption (55 mph) and that was when MC speedos in US had a 80 mph max. speedo. setting.

I also think that in many cases the speed limits are set for revenue generation.

That used to be a common thing.  But, many states now take most of the money instead of letting local municipalities keep it.  When the money stopped staying in town, the town cops lost the incentive to stop speeders.

In KY there were several 'famous' towns that were speed traps.  When the state changed the revenue rules those cops stopped most of that activity.  Same here in NM.

No source of revenue out here for local LEO's.  The fines go to the state Judiciary.  The counties do the enforcement.

Decades ago, in Montana, I was speeding along on a long, straight stretch of deserted highway, far in excess of the federally mandated 55 MPH limit. In the distance, a speck appeared and gradually loomed larger as we approached one another. Unfortunately for me, it was a state trooper. After we passed each other, he turned around on the highway, and I pulled over and waited for him. Fortunately for me, the fine was only $5, in cash, payable right then and there into his cigar box stuffed with bills!

I still remember his appearance: very calm, with short-sleeved brown shirt, cigar in his mouth, sunglasses, trooper hat, and badge with three curious numbers on it. It turns out those numbers are the dimension of the graves the Montana vigilantes would dig for their victims!

Same for AZ at the time.  Not sure if it's still on the books.  Not a moving violation.

Ride as fast as you can brake in the distance you can see in front of you. In other words, don't do 100 if you  cant see round the next corner. Ride fast, but ride smart. I watch "horrific motorcycle crash videos" on youtube frequently. It shows me, reminds me, to ride smart. You see why crashes happen, whether it's the bikers fault or some dick in a car that hits them. You tend to learn how acting dumb, pulling wheelies in traffic, speeding, when it's not good to do so, or when, whatever the f*** you do won't save you from the dick in the car who does something unexpected.

half of those csah video are riders being fuckwits, and the others are car divers beings dumb, blind dicks.

Ride to live/ live to ride/ride smart if you ride fast. Remember your kids, your parents, your wife, husband, lover when you take your life in someone elses hands.

Having said that, I'm a speed demon. I like to try and double the limit wherever I go. It's a game I play.  It really widens your eyeballs, but if traffic, road conditions , speed traps, weather slow me down, I slow down.

no point dying........ Not in a hurry for that.

Let me help you out just a bit on the facts Wayne.  It was our dear President Nixon who signed the bill enacting a 55MPH limit nation wide, Carter had nothing to do with it.  Not sure of accuracy of this following claim, but wikapedi says Nixon wanted a 50mph limit for passenger cars, and 55 for trucks, initially.
