D

A Cessna 335 is the unpressurized version of the Cessna 340...a twin engine aircraft, soooo.. must have been a pretty bad situation to have had an off airport landing due to an engine failure or was some other reason..curious.

just say'in
Will they maintain height in a rate one turn on one engine if you don't turn into the "dead" one ?

Yes if you get the bad engine feathered it will fly quite nicely on one in either direction or even a roll.

Than you, I'm not twin rated, but I do have over 2,000 powerless landings!

I don't think it was his ego he was massaging. He just wanted to show me I could do it. Mind you, he knew there was no traffic on the ground or in the air, and the wind was calm. And he'd also seen me land a sailplane with precision.

As for the 335:  It won't climb on one engine above 5000 feet. I don't know of a piston twin that can. At 1000 feet on a 90 degree F day, density altitude is 5500 feet. Faced with rising ground he may have had no alternative to a controlled forced landing. I can also envision situations where both engines failed: A fuel system failure (or misfueling with Jet A). My instrument instructor killed himself and passengers, in a light twin, taking off from Truckee (5900 MSL) into an ice fog. Both props iced up on the climb out and he augered into a back yard half a mile from the airport.
Ok maybe it wasn't his ego he was massaging, was he flying with one hand ? I'm not commenting at all on why the crash ended fatally. Period. The guys paid with their lives. I've been a flight instructor for over ten years and I know that simulating an emergency while not exposing yourself to that emergency is where the real skill comes in, not some mis placed,  mis timed act of bravado that is thinly disguised as "training". Also Donald Duck can be taught to land a sailplane accurately since the glide performance can vary from 50/1 with zero air brake, and 15/1 or so with full brake. An overshoot dead stick in your Cessna can be dealt with to a degree with side slip, but an undershoot is a problem because you've no brake to reduce to extend your glide. If he wants to play games, he ought'a do it on his own or not at all. What would he have done if you'd gone up again solo and done the same thing ? Berated you or said to HIS boss, "I taught him that" he's a great pilot... BS.

Please be aware that if the offending engine has either a broken spring inside the prop or an oil control problem and the prop won't feather you are in very serious trouble.

Could be an electric prop..no?

Hey anytime you leave the ground in one of these machines the potential for disaster is there.
Thanks for the warning though.

Doesn't seem sensible to me but..

It is the same.   I just didn't want to admit that I'd been reading the BBC ...  :embarrassed:
