Shinko on EV?
« on: February 03, 2019, 09:55:00 PM »
Got a new set of Shinko 230’s that I bought for another Guzzi but traded her too soon! Anyway, I would like to know if the 130/90/17 will fit on the rear of my 98 EV? Factory is 140/80/17, fyi.
My Avons are not worn yet but thinking ahead.  :bike-037:

Thanks in advance,

I really wish I was open minded enough to give these Shitco things a go..
Maybe I've become accustomed to being ripped off with Michelins, but when I've overcooked an apex and about to run off the road, where only extra lean past my usual panic point is required, there's something about the word "SHINKO" that screams "BROKEN FEMUR..!"
I'm not able to give an honest opinion of how they stack up because I've never ridden 'round the block on one, (probably never will), but the word "Michelin" or "Pirelli, just sounds better.
Brand association I suppose.
A bit like when I'm a long way from any help and I reach for the starter on a BMW, I just "feel" safer than on my Guzzi, but history tells me I'm in error to think that way..
Anyhoo...
Does anyone have any shots of a well used rear or front, (or both) with the edges pasted up just a bit ?

You won't get one from me.  When I built the Skorpion out of a pile, I put a set of "Podiums" on it. They were.. ok.. here in the midwest. Once I took it to the SoCal canyons, however, the first order of business was getting them off. I did ride it to the San Diego rally and on some roads down there.. but carefully. Both ends were telling me that maybe I should just slow down and smell the roses.
Put a set of Conti sport attack3s on. Yowza! Good tires..  :thumb:

Edit: for the OP. Ridden sanely, 712s should be ok on an EV. They are ok on the G5

I fully accept the notion that most tyres will out perform the average rider, which statistically most of us here are.
But.
The limiting factor as to how far I will push my tyres is not how good they are, it's how good I FEEL like they are..
And Shitco just doesn't sound.....Good !
Honestly, if you disguised the tread and re branded my brand new Pilot 5's, in such a way that I didn't know, I'd probably pack my dacks on them and vice versa on the others.

I too was skeptical however, after running a set on the '07 Norge, I was most impressed.  YMMV.

Good stick, I am not a really aggressive rider but I do push it to my own limits, they never let me down.  Mileage was better than the Michelins and others that I have tried.   Again, YMMV.

Best,

All I know is for the price the Shinkos are a very good value.
I had them on a couple of different bikes and they felt planted in the corners and lasted longer than I had the bikes. :bike-037:

I'm on my 9th rear and 5th front with the 804/805 big blocks on my Tigers over the years.  Fabulous tire, zero blow outs, balance well, wear pretty good, 5k rear and 10k fronts, only 1 front cupped and that was because I ran it low for too long after offroading, excellent road manner, solid off road except in mud but that is what you get with a "paddle style" rear design.  Wish they made 'em in a size small enough for the v7 as they are so much better then the speed demons on road.

Bottom line, one can blow all the money they wish on name brand tires. I've ran Shinkos on several heavy bikes and pushed then to my limits with no adverse conditions. Mileage is as good of better than the top brands as well.

Been running Shinkos on my LeMans III for about 2 years.  No complaints.  All of my riding is street, and I maybe put on about 3,000 miles a season.  When these wear out, it'll be Shinkos again.  For around half the price of the big names, you get a really good tire.

On heavier bikes such as Harley's one should get from 7-8k when ridden reasonably. I sold my 03 Electra glide when the shinko had 5k with still a fair amount of useable tread. Give one a try, what have you got to loose? Read as many reviews as you can find from users and see how many are negative.

I'm right at 6,000 miles on the rear on my EV and ready to change. Have a brand new set in waiting. I also put a set oin my 1100 Breva and 1986 1000 Lemans. In the past I have ran Metzler's and  Michelin's and so far very pleased with the Shinko's.

not a cheap tire just inexpensive because of advertising ETC!
on a 1998 and them 2001 EV mileage total over 180000.
last few tires trying to find something like the dunlop 491 that i usually changed at 12000 but would have done 15000 but was square.
BT45 never got 4500 miles,
Bridgestone S11 6000
 roadriders 3 at 7000
everything bald so far by the way.
tried the Shinko 230 front and rear and I just changed the rear at 6000 but it haad at least 1000 left but we are looking at a week of rain so I was bored
did the 712 this time at $77 if I remember right to the front door and nothing getting good mileage I'd rather spend that extra $$$ on good scotch!
no problems an any of them and thats more than I can say on some of the name brands.

As I recall, Yokohama ( spelling? ), decided to get out of the motorcycle tire business.
Shinko, a Korean conglomerate, bought the molds and formulas from them and set up shop.
They have expanded their line and have a good retail track record.
Some folks will be turned off, because they are a Korean company, are budget priced, etc.
In my experience with my 02 Stone, then with my B 1100, they handle better than I do, last at least 10,000 miles on the
rear and I buy 2 tires for the price of 1 big name tire.
Until I ride something else with different tires that really impress me, I will go with Shinkos.
YMMV

Not a critic of the Shinko as such, but always been wary of seeking to economise on tyres, brakes and lights.
No, I haven't run a Shinko and most decidedly never will, but I'll bet my aching arse that if some bargain hunter on this forum crashes due to poor tyre choice, we'll never hear about it.
As I mentioned earlier, it's more about the confidence that a good tyre brings, which translates into enhanced enjoyment. Again, if you re-branded my Michelins with Shinko and re-deigned the tread pattern, I'd probably ride off in blissful ignorance, so I'm aware that my logic is probably flawed, I just choose not to care.
Buying cheap tyres is like buying cheap oil or brake pads...Bugger it !
Also.
I've been called a lot of things, not all of them complimentary which will surely surprise, but never formidable.
BTW..
That'd be run, not ran.. :thumb:

Here was the last "name brand" tire I purchased for my EV (Metzler). Since then I went Shinko and never looked back.

So, Shinko is a manufacturer.  What tire you choose is going to determine the level of grip you have.

I have run many sets of shinko dual sport tires on dual sports from 250 to 650 cc and no complaints.

I have run Shinko Raven 009s on my 650 Versys from dirt to interstates without a hiccup.   I also ran the 009s on the Vulcan Meanstreak without a hiccup.

I picked up nails twice on Michelin Pilot Road 4s, and once with Perelli Angel GTs running on my 1400 Concours and Trophy SE.

The flat PR4s got replaced with contimotion since that was all I could find on the road and no issues out of them except they give you no clue you are about to wear into the cords.

I've only tried a few Shinko tires and only on my "classic" bikes. My experience: the Shinko 230 Tour Master has better traction (much better in the wet) than the Bridgestone S11 Spitfire I had been using and the same feel, but wears slightly faster. A pair costs approx. $30 less than the Bridgestone - $128 a pair vs. $158 (it had been closer to $60 less until the price of the Bridgestones dropped recently).

I'm running the Shinko 712 on my Morini 350 K2 and previously used them on my MZ Silver Star 500. Better tire than what they replaced (Conti Go!) - traction just as good, last twice as long, only $100 a pair.
