Title: Head bolt torq value
Post by: fotoguzzi on December 03, 2022, 02:38:28 PM
Are cylinder head bolts torq’d to 11foot pounds? Or am I reading this wrong?
What does +90* mean?

Torque to 11ft lb, then turn a further 90 deg or 1/4 turn 👍

guzzisteve.  Do you torque them dry or are they oiled? The manual doesn't mention oiled by the look of it.

The nuts, washers & bolts been coming out of mineral spirits. I don't lube the stuff no. If you use stock metal gaskets it is only 1 torque, no re-torque.

Are those stock head gaskets metal on a Norge? I’ll have to look closer. I would like only 1 torq!
I believe both sides passed the squish test.

My exhaust header studs came out rather than the nut coming off.. I can’t get the nuts loose.. do I need new studs and nuts or can I at least temporarily just screw the stud/nut into the head?

If you have them out of the head, put in a vice & cut slice in nut w/dremmel not quite through then crack it w/chisel.

Sometimes you can clamp a vice grips on the unthreaded portion of the stud and wind the nut off. If there is no unthreaded portion,I just grab it in the middle.

As an aside, almost always when I've run into the "+90°" torque value, the fasteners are of the "one time use" variety.  I remember Ford cylinder head bolts were throwaway items and the head gasket set came with new bolts.

Guzzi may have a different idea about this.
