Title: Who here has ridden their Guzzi to the Moon?
Post by: SmithSwede on November 28, 2021, 01:24:05 PM
I rode my Moto Guzzi to the Moon.

Well, sorta.  Moonscape Overlook.   Near Hanksville, Utah.  10 miles of dirt road to get there, but an unforgettable view.

I did ride where they faked the moon landing.  J/K.     Oh, and don't kid around with a park ranger about that.

I've been to Hanksville a few times. That part of Utah is really remote. You'd want a reliable motorcycle to go there. Goblin Valley state park is near there. It's a must see place, where the famous scene in Galaxy Quest was filmed where they had to retrieve the Beryllium sphere. Also Little Wild Horse and Bell slot canyons just a few miles away.

I have not been to Hanksville, but we were in the general vicinity this summer on our trip riding from CA to MI.  What we did really enjoy was Utah 12 from Torrey to Escalante - just a bit to the southwest of Hanksville.   This was in early June, so temps were scorching, but the scenery was absolutely stunning.  There is an area were road runs along a ridge with 1000ft+ drop offs on both sides.  I had no idea that Utah had such a varied landscape.  Just prior to this, were rode through a verdant valley with cattle and sheep ranches.  My prior impressions were from driving across northern UT in my childhood.  Long, straight and flat - some of that, but alot of variety too.

It was a nice ride, but there is something about running along water that appeals to me.  The Maine Coastline and sections of the PCH get my vote.

Dang it.  I rode Utah 24 and 25.   And 128 along the River near Moab.   Had no idea about 12.  Oh well—excuse for another trip

The Alps have alot stunning roads and views, South of Sweden in early summer with miles of yellow rape fields next to the road is beautiful. I would like to drive in USA where there is corn fields and those red/silver silos.   :cheesy:

Smith, I didn't intend to one-up you on your thread.  At first your pics weren't visible to me.  That overlook is beautiful.  Like someone else said, similar to the Badlands in ways.  As we crossed that area, it dawned on me that we were passing through an area of relative rapid gradience between differing landscapes.  The same could be said for a lot of places.  As a contrast, in my area, the land changes are slower over longer distances.  In your pic, you also can see some of the Monument Valley type geography on the right (although different stone I think).  The thing is that there are so many stunning places.  The thing to do is try to appreciate the one your in when you're in it.

Well, I have put about 300,000 miles on Moto Guzzi's over the years.
I just checked and it is 238.855 miles to the moon.
So I guess I have.

Been to Hanksville and the store in the mountain but not that particular location. I agree at UT 12 being one of the most scenic rides in the US. Also been to Craters of the Moon. Stop at the Visitors Center for the history of the place and whats in store when Yellowstone follows suit and blows up. Rode my BMW R bike almost to the moon with 226,000 on the odometer when I sold it.

Yes Prescott, I have been there on the CX100, rode over from Durango/Silverton to Grand Canyon and into Utah. I found a complete goat skeleton that was interesting. I have pictures, but I was still shooting film then.

Can you articulate why the goat skeleton was of interest?

Sorry. That was bad.

Utah has a little bit of everything (except coastline) and a LOT of nothing.
Not many taverns.
Great for stargazing.
You really do need to pick your seasons for that crazy desert area.
