new tag, how about a well?  Doesn't have to operate, this one has been played for years.  BTW- it's by the State Capitol Blg.

That's a good one.  Lot's of those around here and we're not even in oil country.

I just wrote "well".  Didn't say it had to pump oil or even pump.  This is open to interpretation.  I wrote it that way deliberately, knowing that oil wells aren't prevalent in some places.

Only "wells" I found today on my loop of VA and WV were of the "wishing" variety. I could have taken a photo of my Convert with one of those, but folks might not take too kindly to someone parking in front of their house and taking a photo...

It was a zoo.. entirely too many people there, and they can just stay off my lawn. I *did* win a major award for an airplane that I restored (gasp) 20 years ago, and the current keeper brought it to Oshkosh.

Tell us about the plane you restored.  A photo would be nice.  You've done so many that I can't guess.

Zoo?  After the lockdown and getting out again.  No surprise.

It was like a time capsule. The back story..
Many years ago, I was sitting at Oshkosh with my old friend Carl (Nascar parts supplier/race car driver) when he said he'd decided he'd never have time to build an airplane and he was going to buy one. I was getting the building itch again, and said I'd sell him the Skyranger. I got a call after coming home and he said he'd take it. (!!)
He came to our strip with ferry pilot Ben, and they flew it to Charlotte, where his property backs up to "Dale's place."  Get the picture? Carl is a gearhead of the highest degree, had an Indy car ride, etc.
He called me about a week later asking how to land it, etc. He was having problems. I told him speeds, etc. but it's not a hard airplane to land..
It was the first stages of Parkinson's,  and he never flew it solo.
It sat in his barn for 20 years (I'll get better and be able to fly it)  when an Airline captain, Karl, bought it and had it ferried out from Carl's.
Karl called me and asked if I was the guy that restored it. "833? Uh.. yeah." (wondering if he was going to sue me or something.)  He said he was going to fly it to Oshkosh and would like to meet up if I was going. Texted me and said where it was parked, and I thought, at least they could have let him park in the antique/classic area..that is a mile from the Red Barn. Went out and couldn't find it.. hopped a tram back toward the campground, and they were tying it down front and center in front of the red barn. (!) It stayed there all week, sort of unusual. It *was* a time capsule, and looked exactly like it did when it left our strip 20 years ago.
To make an even longer story short, it won a Lindy. (!!)

It's the highest award a builder/restorer can get in the US..
Karl lives in Virginia, and stopped by our strip on the way home.

and let the Lovely Assistant (tm) and yours truly get a picture with it.

Beautiful girl, beautiful plane, and, well, Chuck you just do the best you can.  :)

Here I am, lucky to not screw up an oil change.  At least I can admire great work when I see it.  Congratulations, Chuck.

I wish my old boss was still around so I could show him this thread. He passed just over a month ago, he also suffered from Parkinson's. He was restoring a Curtis Robin when the disease prevented him from finishing the project. It was little more than a small pile of miscellaneous pieces when he acquired it, mainly for the title and FAA paperwork. I thought he would never finish it as he was beyond a perfectionist so everything he did was better than perfect. As an example he took a couple of weeks of afterwork evenings to machine a new float bowl for the carburetor. There also a lot of new machined parts in the restored OX5 engine. To the best of my knowledge the airframe is now in the hands of a restorer in Grass Valley in California, the engine in the possession of a museum in Hood River Oregon. He also had a perfectly restored Stearman with a 300 Lycoming instead of the stock 220, but that part is on the hush hush. Just a higher compression ratio with different pistons. Anyway yours is a very nice plane, I can appreciate the amount of work that goes into something like this. Al worked on his during after hours well into the night and untold hours during the weekends.

This was a much better "project" than a Robin in Pieces. It was apart, and hadn't flown since the 50s. It was originally owned by a farmer, and had some (ahem) bodges that we as old Guzzi lovers have seen before.
As our friend Bill would say, "Comma, but."
It was all there. Scrounging/making parts is the time consuming part of a restoration, just like a motorcycle. The original instruments were still in the panel. If a guy didn't know what he was looking at, it just looked like a pile of rubble, though. I gave all the pix to Carl, and Karl (number 2) had them in a scrap book to display, so I can't post a picture. The oil and dirt covered engine was at least laying on a tire on the dirt floor so I could save and overhaul it.
I bought it cheap. (Guzzi content)
I didn't replace anything that could be repaired, and didn't put anything on it that wouldn't have come from the factory in 46. Did a *lot* of research, of course. I'm old enough to know what old airplanes *used to* look like, and they weren't the overly restored shiny aircraft that are being shown today.
Apparently some judges realized that, too..
