Compared to a motorcycle, yes it would be boring. But compared to an accord or the Buicks you old guys should be driving ;) it's tons of fun. Just pretend you're 19 and drive it that way.

Hmmm, when I was 19 only a throbbing V8 or a loud bike would do justice....Small sporty cars were driven by college guys who parents bought them the car   ;D

Yesterday in SW Kansas a 85 year old pilot was killed (only one on board) when his plane flipped over on landing on a private grass strip. Appears he was still enjoying life and went out doing something he probably loved. Could do worse.  I will admit when I can ride the Norge to the schools I work at and one of the high school kids take notice I puff my chest out a bit more. Nice to know I can still create a bit of "cool" in a high school crowd.

I think what he did was go out to take northern lights pictures late the other night and then wandered around outside with a camera wondering why he was up.  Happens to me all the time.   :D

I read somewhere that the key to happiness is to be grateful for what you have.  So I, at 71 consider it a blessing that I can still ride and enjoy working on the bikes in the garage.  That's my focus rather than no longer being able to do 400 miles days on a bike without extreme fatigue.

Moral- look at what you have, be thankful, try not to dwell on what you've lost.

My apologies for sounding preachy... it does work.

ChuchH and Petrus ;-T

I don't like getting old either, but I'm trying to take a positive attitude about it.
You know, the senior discounts, the experience gained through the years, the sympathy from the officer who pulls me over while hot doggin' it in the canyons, the respect I get from the "kids" at work, and so forth.
I've already had open heart surgery, and I alternate between pilates and spinning class 5 days a week with a class full of beautiful girls less the half my age.

Firstly; now that I'm over my little temper tantrum I'd like to thank each of you for your reply/support/advice/view point and understanding.
Everyone here posted a valid opinion won honestly in the course of life.
The poke in my eye came about like this: I use a packer pulled behind my ATV or Jeep to keep the spring icing off the trails and clear in the yard so my dogs (or me/my wife) don't slip and break bones. The packer is 4 corrugated tubes filled with cement and having an axe attached to a frame. Full weight is about 500 pounds. Normally (or possibly formerly) if I needed it moved I'd just pull it around. At warmer temperatures the channel along the tubes fill with snow (which collects more snow which makes the packer useless) so I lift each end onto a piece of 2x6 to let the 'heat' melt the snow away.  For the first time in my life I could not lift a weight I chose to lift. It was a shocker.
My body is under attack from arthritis but I manage that issue as best I can. I can still put in 1000km days on the bike as long as it isn't at extra-legal speeds. I can walk my trails, cut my wood, wrestle with 120 pound dogs, fish, paddle, and enjoy life... but that loss of self image caught me off guard.
Having a place/forum with like minded people who are 'there' of have 'already been there' was invaluable to me last night. Thanks.

I'm retired. Both rotator cuff tears forced me to slow down. I started scuba diving at 56. That and an observatory are all I need. And an elliptical.

One of the finest sights I have ever seen was observing a German couple in their mid 70's diving off Cozumel. They had a dressing ritual on the boat before the dive, and after getting equipment off after it was over, embracing and celebrating the dive. I hope to dive until I'm dead.

Attitude is your friend or your enemy. Followed by your over all health. Some of us have good genes, some of us, not so much. I'm retiring shortly, will turn 61 right after that. Still feel about 36. Banged up the body over the years but so far it has rebounded (within reason). Some issues slow me down a wee bit, just take an extra nap and keep on truckin'!

I see some of my fellow riders in their 80's and 90's, so I hope to be doing the same when my clock says I'm that old. You know, with a full face helmet I don't look half bad.  ::)

I too am aging and have recently reached the exalted state of 'Official Old Fartness' in that I'm now receiving the old age pension.

I have to admit I find I am less than enthusiastic about the whole thing.

"Inside every aging old fart there is a rampant 20 year old trying to get out" (and wondering what you have done to him)

I've noticed that I'm not as robust as I once was and  don't bounce as effectively. I know my powers of concentration and focus are not what they once were and adjust my riding accordingly.

It's an ugly business.

I am 70 long and sometimes violent years old.  I have pernicious anemia and diabetes, my legs are more than 60 % paralyzed.
Less than six years ago I lay dead on the road under a blanket with crushed chest and shattered ribs and some other broken bones, I don't know how many stitches in various places and what ever miracle work the EMTs did and I woke up in an intensive care unit three and a half days later.
My ribs did not heal lined up properly but they are solid.
A year later I broke my leg on a trail in the Olympic Forrest and rode 25 miles to town.
I have been in Hawaii now four and a half years and am again doing chin-ups, pushups, lifting weights, and wheelchairing miles at a time.
Attitude is everything.  Oh, and I have a new 30 year old girlfriend.  That helps my attitude a lot.  Geezers Rule.

You're all right.  Giving up dirt riding was the worst but I knew others have similar or worse things going on.

There are many things I could do when I was younger that I can't manage these days. However, this age has its advantages, too. My experience has taught me to do things smarter, which often makes up for my lost strength and flexibility. For those times when only strength will do, I have a much better bank account these days, with which I may hire help. Every age brings it's advantages and disadvantages...

I appreciate reading the posts here.  Like all of you I'm doing my best to adjust to the changes that age brings, both physically and emotionally.  I'm hoping to ride on 2 wheels for another 10 years, then probably switch to a 3 wheeled vehicle.  While you can do things (diet, exercise, etc.) to help yourself, good health is mostly a crap shoot, and you take what you're given.  Thankfully my health is still pretty good and I appreciate what I can still do, and try to feed common sense to that 18 yr old still in my head.

PS.  I'm now 68

I have not ridden in a year due to nph.  I had surgery a month ago to put a valve in my head and am waiting to see improvement. I too bought a convertable thinking it would fill the void of no riding. It has not and now I am trying to sell it. Nothing can take the place of an unobtructed  view of the road ahead.Hope springs............ ......

Well, here's my take:

When I was:

18 - Girls from 17-25 were hot

25 - Girls from 17-30 were hot

35 - girls from 17-40 were hot (event with the kids in tow)

45 - Girls from 17-50 were hot

50 - girls from 17 to 57 were hot.

At this rate, if I live to 80 - I will be totaly surrounded by hot women. ~;

I helped an older gal with a walker into a store the other day, Thought, "Hmm not bad.."  ;D
To the OP.. 58? Old?? are you kidding me??

I haven't ridden since last December.   Our son took his mother down to the bar on the Ducati so the wife is happy.  If the surgery on the 17th gives the desired result, I'll be back on the motorcycle the 19th.  ::) Maybe. Not sure if I'll sell the Miata or not.  Daughter in law and the granddaughters all enjoy driving it and it's paid for so it doesn't eat.

Same here. I can't get on any of my motorcycle so I purchased this Miata thinking I could replace the motorcycle.
Matt

The problem is the Miata is to big, you need something smaller and more like a child's toy:

I met another 75 year old that loves his Abath and commented on how easy it was to get out of.

Also there's another option:

With the Chrome Brooklands you can think of it as a big V7.

V65 SP - Finished but the Dyna died so it's non-op'd
