removing factory paint from bolts and fasteners
« on: January 19, 2019, 01:02:56 PM »
Many bolts on my new Griso have yellow paint from the factory indicating they were torqued. Is paint thinner or mineral spirits OK for removal? Apparently my $600 fee for set-up did not cover this. Thanks.

I always spray brake cleaner on a cloth on my finger tip to clean them. Don't spray twd m/c. Move the clean areas of cloth around your finger & respray every few bolts. Drys quick & leaves no film.
Maybe I'll see you around Reno. I'm in Fernley.

Why remove them?  Kind of cool having a hand assemble anything these day's. Certainly don't remove the yellow paint from the throttle stop set screws. Aka (sacred screws)

They're not only there to indicate, (Possibly wrongly!) that they have been correctly torqued but also as witness marks to allow easy detection should they come loose. I'd leave 'em.

Makes sense. Haven't removed mine yet. Adds a touch of originality for later. Don't think I can leave stickers tho.
Think I'll take my time personalizing this one. Try that for a change.

I vote for leaving them on.  It shows Guzzi's old-school construction.

I routinely mark fasteners on my bikes to quickly check them. I find the paint pens in white and yellow are easy to see in most cases.  My Chrome Stones swingarm was trying to back its way out and the paint saved my butt.  Mike

Those paint marks are essential for a frequent quick scan to assure all(?) is well.
OTOH: I was a bit pissed to deal w/red thread locker on shock mounts, axle nuts, rotor carriers and rotor mounting screws.
Plus, w/such a short purchase on drive line mounting studs blue thread lock may be a good idea; to back up the 6mm spring washers, w/squirrel nuts :)  R3~
