Wrenching Under Extreme Conditions
« on: March 19, 2018, 07:55:19 PM »
All my 55+ years of adventures of fustration, despair, and aggravation while repairing and maintaining motor vehicles pale in comparision to this incredible tale of one man's perserverance in the face of overwhelming adversity:

It would be hard to have a MORE amazing tale of endurance, because the adventurer wouldn't be with us any more to write it ...!   He came pretty close.   One more lost bolt, one stud stripping on the way out, and ....

My best friend has a 52' military Willis similar to that one, metal top a bit shorter and PTO to the front. In low 4wd 1st gear you can walk faster tan it tops out at. I pulled him out of many drainage ditches in the middle of the night w/my Int Travellall 1 ton.

I can appreciate this story, and always carried a shovel out 4 weeling.  Wish I had all the $ I spent on 4WDing.

His was yellow/blue markings on it under all the paint, a Navy jeep.  He still has it and it still runs.
When I talked to him today I told him about this story, shame he has no internet.

Old Jeeps and Guzzis have much in common...just enough of the good stuff to get the job done, easy to work on, very satisfying to own and operate, and quick to become family instead of just another appliance... I have owned both and now I have spoken...

Indeed.

Great story twowings!
My neighbor has a 40's era Willys Jeep languishing in tall grass next to his barn.
Breaks my heart to see that everytime I drive by.
One of my biggest regrets 30 years ago was selling a nice 1972 Land Rover 88 I used as a second vehicle. Drop dead reliable and could go anywhere.

Again, thanks for the link....a great read!

The WW2 Jeep is considered by many to be the most significant vehicle ever made...Cheap and lightweight, the original Brown-Lipe two speed transfer case and 4 wheel drive design is still be used  in modern vehicles. You can flip over your new Ford or Dodge 3/4 ton truck and it looks like the Jeep flipped over being worked on...

Well, it would definitely have to compete for that title with the Model T Ford and the VW Type 1.

And the Austin/Morris "Mini" for that matter.   All of those changed motoring (some world-wide, some on their own continent) economics and/or technology to a great degree.

Thumbnail analysis indicates that the "first motor vehicle" ever seen by the most people in the world is the Land-Rover, from that "sun never sets" crowd who drove them everywhere ....

The Jeep was the first smaller lighter weight mass produced vehicle with all wheel drive.. But I might be a bit bias on this because of my many Jeeps....Real Jeeps have straight axles... :thumb:

Well, I should think you might.   I owned and ran a 1980 Jeep J10 pickup for 25 years ....
