V85 won’t start - on road, need help
« on: June 17, 2021, 03:38:41 PM »
My buddies V85 fails to crank.  We stopped for lunch and everything seemed fine.  Now, no go.  NOT the kill switch.
Here is what we see when turning the key.
- dash lights up
- then, in the lower right of the dash is a message that says Enter Personal Code”. This stays on for 10 seconds then goes away.  We think this is standard until you change the code, which he has not done.
We also see:
Upper left, solid yellow engine symbol light.  Next to that flashing ABS light.
Upper right, flashing traction control light (! Inside triangle inside a circle
Lower right, kickstand light (because kickstand is down)

That’s all we have so far.

Do you hear the fuel pump pressurization when the ignition is switched on ?

I would lift the side stand, put it in neutral, and pull in the clutch - and then try it.

Aha, no fuel pump sound.  That’s a clue…

It started!  But we didn’t find anything wrong.  Just pulled the fuses, punched the kill switch about 50 times real fast, then it fired right up.  So maybe a kill switch or fuse connection, or ?
Any, back on the road until further notice.
Thanks for the tips, Kevin.

Relay, fuse, sidestand switch, kill switch.
Hope it keep going.

I believe it’s the code entry, starts without it sometimes. Check your manual default is 0000.

We did change the code from the factory 00000, so maybe that was part of the problem?.  Anyway, we made it to our campsite and it has started up about 5 times now no problem.  We will keep our fingers crossed and travel on.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

It won't crank in gear with the stand down, could it be that simple?

Glad you got going, but on a general note: I cannot believe Guzzi dealers are still selling bikes and not telling owners that a) the code is very very important b) to remember it and c) write down in the bikes documents... and d) pass on to the new owner who may later need it

When I phoned a UK Guzzi dealer to ask about resetting the code he wasn't even sure what I was on about  :embarrassed: and certainly didn't know that there are companies who can reset the clocks

Maybe an intermittent immobilizer antenna? I *hate* that kind of crap..
I would think that if you entered the user code at that prompt, you could get it going, though. After all, that is what it is for.

FWIW, my battery failed at about 54 weeks old and 16000 miles. It tested good by the auto parts guy. It had tested good by the parts guy.

I have had the exact same experience of a dead starter button on my 2020 V85 with 30,000km on it on 3 separate occasions.   In the past cycling the key off and on corrected the problem.  Today I wasn't so lucky.  Turned the key on, hit the stater and it turned over one revolution, then quit like you disconnected the battery   After trying to bump start it with no success, cycled the key and it started right up.  Terribly frustrating.   Had it in the dealer 2months ago while still under warranty and mentioned the issue and they said it worked fine for them.   WTF .

Any guidance would be appreciated .

.
Crossed my mind on more than one occasion.  Long term Guzzi owner and currently own 2 Guzzi's and an Aprilia.  Love the V85 but reliability is key when you are on the road.    This starting issue always seems to happen when on the road 500 km or more from home, lol    Honda NC750'is intriguing but I'd miss the cruise.

if you see a message telling you enter the code - exactly how do you do that ?  i could do it easily on the Norge but the one time it showed up on the 85 i could not work out how to reset it
