actual CalVin oil capacity ?
« on: January 07, 2019, 11:45:27 AM »
So, what's the WG recommended motor oil fill (with filter) for a 2009 California Vintage 1064CC ???  Book says three liters.

I only ask this question because (sometimes) using the book-listed oil capacity will have motor oil flowing in places where it shouldn't.  A google search turned up nothing.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks,
Kev, when I changed mine, if it was time for the filter also as I did that every other change, I'd fill to about a 1/4 inch from full on the stick, start and run a minute or two to fill the new filter, then just keep adding until it got to the full line. This is what we go by anyway before adding oil. This way I never got to much or to little oil.

On my 2004 California EV  I always put in 3.0 Litres along with a new filter. Never any extra, and the oil level on the dipstick would show a little low after adding exactly 3 litres.   :bike-037:

New filter in pan w/o oil in it, cause it comes out otherwise. 3 qts/lts in and start it, run a bit, shut off & top up till you're satisfied. I never have oil anywhere it shouldn't be.

My 03 EV I fill by volume, 3 litres. This has it about 10-15mm under the full mark. If I fill to full it leaks badly around the rear bearing gasket and drips out the bell housing making a prick of a mess.
Also filling to the full mark takes about an extra 400mls.

And always remember to tighten the oil filter with the right torque.

Quote
The oil level check should be carried out after the engine has run for a few minutes:
the dipstick plug should be introduced in the oil opening without screwing it.

After you have changed the filter which you should pre fill as much as possible bolt the sump back on and throw three litres in. Run it for thirty seconds an leave it for a couple of minutes. Check where the level is on the stick. You're good to go.

If when you're riding it *uses* a bit of oil don't add any more unless it drops below the 'Add' mark on the stick. It probably won't and if it does? Well you have other issues. Don't keep topping it up. It's got tons of oil. If you put three litres in it isn't going to go 'Pop!'

Soooo, is the bike supposed to be on the side stand or the center stand when you check the oil?? This question coming from a guy who has owned Guizzies since 1985.. You would think I would know by now but I always have to think about it.

I also own a 08 Calvin.

Earl,
I've been checking it on the centerstand since 1971 and well over a million miles. No problems.

Well, now that we have THAT out of the way.

How about transmission and shaft drive lube ?
The book says 80W-90 for both.

Oil check on the center stand or in horizontal position.

I have mentioned this:

because this is different to older Californias or Guzzi models!
This is valid for all Californias with twin spark ignition (TECHNICAL BULLETIN NR. 001-2006 16.02.2006 + owner´s manual).

80W90 for both. Avoid synthetic oil (e.g. 75W140). This can lead to leakages because of shrinking or swelling the rotary shaft seals.

And after Wayne fixed a leak I've never added a drop between changes.  So easy even a Guzziti can do it :)

Sorry, I know it is an old topic but think not worth starting another.
When I fill mine correctly, (new filter, center stand, 3 litres) it comes out the back making a mess around the rear wheel. My last oil change was 5,00 km ago and I had been keeping the oil level up until recently when I became sick and tired of all the mess around the back wheel. I cleaned everything last week, checked the oil and it was on the bottom of the dipstick. Ran it for 500 km and no oil around the rear tyre. I took the sump plug out now, oil is clean, only 1500 ml came out. There is probably 500 ml in the filter?

Where is the oil coming out?
You either have a leak: rear main or rear main carrier)
Or most likely the drains into the heads are blocked meaning the crankcase ventilation isn't working and filling with oil, it then fills the air box which has an overflow that exits just behind the gearbox.

So do you have oil out the bel housing? Or the hose?

Thank you very much.
I checked the air filter. There was a tablespoon of oil in it but I could not find an outlet.
I washed thoroughly under the bike and topped up to a total of 2800 ml oil. No problem after 1500 km except when I really gave it to her and revved her hard up a large, long, twisty hill. Then a couple of drops came out but hard to tell from where.
I am mystified, but happy. Maybe I cleaned a blocked hose?
Sadly when I checked in the air filter there was a lot of dust bypassing the filter but that will be another thread I will search.
Thanks again.

The out let is mocked into the left side if the airbox I think.

For the dust, check the intake tube running from the box to the inlets, the seals around them can dislodge and also go hard.
I had one on a Sport 1100 I had where I had to wrap tape around the tube to build it up to seal until new ones arrived
