EV speedo gear binding
« on: January 07, 2019, 06:39:25 PM »
When putting this 98 EV gear box together for a friend he had a replacement speedo gear because the one in the 70K gear box was stripped, or worn over, when putting the new one in the cover it spins freely till you tighten the nut down, even finger tight, tighten with a wrench it will not move. The thought seems to be that the gear box cover was machined wrong. My friend who has worked on many many Guzzi transmissions has never seen this. It looks like I'll need to find a used EV gear box cover.

How many of the hardened washers are you using? It would be easier just to have a qualified machinist bore the hole a little deeper.

Unless older parts have been substituted, AFAIK the 98 EV requires TWO thrust washers.  One above the worm drive and one below.  Is it possible that there is already an old one thrust washer stuck down onto the bottom of the drive alignment hole and thus you are now trying to install three?  Could you add a sealing washer under the outside cover hex head?  Perhaps just add a crush washer/spacer rather than trying to re-machine the cover bore.

How did the original drive gear get damaged?  Any possibility that the bore bottom  hole that receives the tip of the worm shaft was damaged?  Same question for the bottom 'shelf' that holds the lower thrust washer?

The thickness of the original shim is 1,0mm. Thickness of a standard M6 washer is 1,25mm.

Be sure that you have the original shims. (I have some that I can send you.)
