Limited Edition Numbering System (Stornello, Anyway)
« on: June 30, 2017, 09:11:08 PM »
So, you may recall (or not), that I was annoyed at the dealer for selling on eBay #123 of the "limited edition" Stornello after I had said in an email that I wanted that one of the 10 the website said were in stock.

I got over that little funk by buying #212, a meaningful number in my Army life, as that was the number of our quarters on Schofield Barracks "back in the day."

Ah, but lookee what I saw on my Stornello today:

The "123" and "212" were the last three digits on those machine's VIN's!  That was what the crates showed ...

... so "some people" -- including yours truly -- did the Ass U Me thing.  :embarrassed:

That'll teach me to be a horse's petunia  ... and may have surprised that eBay buyer by now, too.

As "only" 300 of the 1000 Moto Guzzi made were to have been shipped to the U.S., and ARGuz has #105 -- http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=90941.msg1435966#msg1435966 -- the U.S.-bound Stornellos(i?)  were not in one lot of 300, but scattered over the whole 1000.  Makes one wonder about who in Mandello kept track of that ... and how.

Now I am, of course, straining to find some significance in my several past lives and present in #443.  But I really don't care anymore as I couldn't be happier with "Beata."

To the Honorable Mr. Hagan, just my 2.257336343115124  (approximately 2 cents worth) but it's a fine new friend you've got there.     (1000/443)

Having worked at an Indian dealer during the introduction of the new machines, we had a chance to carefully study the numbering of the limited edition of 1901 bikes. Even talking with other dealers, we could see no pattern or consistency to the numbering across the three trim levels, nor in their order of delivery. In fact, if anything we received bikes with lower numbers as time went on - we theorized that the company had been building bikes and stuffing them into a warehouse, and it was a case of first in, last out. The lowest number bike I sold was #42 out of 1901; I think the lowest number bike we received was #28 or so. During that first year, we had numbered bikes ranging throughout the full scope of the 1901 with little rhyme or reason.

The only bikes I can guess the allocation of are perhaps the first ten - to the company's collection and the senior execs!

Bill, Your Stornello, I believe would be considered, to be right in the center of the production run.  When you buy steaks the best ones are considered to be center cut ones.  So just savor this delight.  You did good.

have a professional painter put Knob Creek on the side number plates and you'll forget about the other #.

I think Indian deliberately randomized the number distribution. Maybe Guzzi did the same thing.

Lovely bike! Ride it yet?

I wouldn't put too much stock in "limited edition".  If you recall the first Racers were supposed to be limited edition.   Once they start selling like hotcakes, that goes out the window. Just a marketing ploy.

Congrats on the bike, and welcome to the world of small blocks!

My favorite thing about the Anniversario "limited edition" is that the ads all show a number out of 750 total, it's engraved right on the bike- e.g "012/750"

The actual bikes are /1000

Guess they figured they would sell more than originally anticipated.

There were a few numbered limited editions of the V11 Sport/LeMans series. Here's the Tenni registry as an example of how the 170 numbered bikes were distributed around the world:

And the Scura Register (700 bikes):

2002 Moto Guzzi V11 Sport Scura
