Norge rider stranded in Price Utah
« on: July 23, 2018, 06:07:35 PM »
I just got a call from Jim Walker, and his Norge has stalled in Price Utah. The motor sputtered and died, and would not turn over. He got a new battery and got another 15 min down the road until it happened again.
If there's anyone who can offer assistance of any kind please call him at 309 264 0833. He has a motel room so he's set for tonight. Mechanical help or transportation to a bike shop would be huge!

Just throwing this out there.   I would be checking all grounds off of battery and fuses.

Would not charging kill a new battery in 15 min?

A new battery that has not been fully charged, yes.

Norge rider here,it has been a long day...I had a battery charger delivered to my motel room after I saw 10.9 volts on the bike dashboard. When I plugged in the charger it said 15% charge! It is now at 71% so fingers crossed I may make it to my friend's memorial at Lake Tahoe! Thanks for all the input and I have changed the belt...

I'm sure the Norge would use the same belt as the Griso

My spare is 2' 5"  (735 mm) long (around circumference) just over 1/2" (15 mm) wide with 4 ridges for a grooved pulley and has Motto Guzzi 05702530 written on it
Also has   27    05 2015 A in faint print

If you disable the headlight it should go twice as far I would think
http://www.thisoldtractor.com/guzzi007/schematics/2007_Norge.gif
Pull the headlight relay (4)

Best bet might be to have one of the dealers courier a belt to where you can work on it.

Good Luck

Is there any chance this is simply a standard length Gates drive belt ?

Yes, I put one on NJ Nick's Norge when the same thing happened to him a few years ago. However, I don't remember the part number. He obtained that information from someone here, so it's gotta' be recorded somewhere.

Edit: did some Google searching and found this thread:

Send a note here early in the morning if you would like one overnighted to you if you cannot find one locally.  I've got a spare with part #05702530 for my 2008 Norge.

You people are all over-thinking this alternator belt thing.  Do any of you remember the intrepid Paul VanHoof riding a LoopFrame from Alaska to Patagonia?  Lost a generator drive belt in Peru.  Went to a local street market and bought a bunch of cheap panty hose.  Cut off a leg and tie a knot.  Works for about 20km and then you apply another.  Repeat until you can get to a spare parts shop.  Roadside ingenuity!

Wow .... just   Wow

what an awesome demonstration of the Guzzi community.

Am in the process of planning a forthcoming intercontinental trip ...

The responses to this OP are very encouraging in terms of fixing anything that should go wrong on the trip.

Just spoke with the broken Norge rider.  He has a belt and is working on installing it in the auto parts store parking lot.  Hopefully it works.  If not, I'm about 2.5 hours away with a truck and trailer.

Hope he's not working on it in 98 degree heat with humidity to match, like I did when Nick's shredded in Frederick, MD.

Guzzista, a hearty thanks to all who responded to my plea! I was at the auto parts store about noon, had about 3ft of shade next to the neighboring building, found a box to open up so I had something to lay on.No real problems getting it apart with the stock tools, then had to kill a couple of hours till the guy got back from Salt Lake City with the belt.the real trick was figuring out I had to feed the ratchet and Allen key socket up around the frame tube, then I could loosen the tensioning screw! Eureka! Bing bang gone, left Price Ut at 3:36pm arrived Ely,Nv. about 8:30pm. I had a high temp of 102 just south of Provo,Ut. Low was 62 on a pass near the Nevada border! Bike ran great, just needed those electrons...I had a great Filet Mignon 2 glasses of Pinot noir, twice baked potatoe at the Jailhouse Casino Steakhouse! Good night to all...

That's fantastic news, we can all sleep soundly tonight.

I looked at my Griso and wondered how difficult it would be to change belts.
Sometime after you recover from the ordeal would you mind listing the steps and tools required.

Thanks

Must have felt great to stick with the problem and whip it's ass.
Did the panel throw up any warning bells or whistles to show the lack of charge ?

Good to hear it got fixed!   :thumb:

Reminds me I need to have a gander at (and maybe replace) the belt on my GS. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" may not be the best advice in this case.   :boozing:
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

My apologies, I just saw this, this morning.  Glad to hear it got solved.

The 24th of July is kind of a local holiday around here and many people turn it into a long weekend when they can (present company included).
