It’s a small detail, but the smooth curve of the headpipes is what does it for me…78-79 I believe

find best resolution for my monitor

The square headlight, square cam covers and squared off headpipes of the next few years just irk me, even tho they are better faster bikes

what is my monitor

California makes you pay to not register your bike for road use, if you ever plan to register and ride it again.  The fee is considerably smaller but if you skip it and want to ride your bike in the state again, you will pay huge penalties to do so.  Many bikes that have a long period of California non-registration without PNO get sold out of state for that reason.

Agreed....that collection covers some classic design beauty and function that is still competitive in both aspects today. That pre-'87 CR250R rips.

"Recent service is said to have included an oil change and a replacement battery, tires, and spark plugs. "

So, this must be what the guy he bought it from told him.

Then later in the ad he states.  "Recent work has included replacement of the battery, spark plugs, and engine oil."

Inconsistencies like this make me question everything and would have me asking many pointed questions if I were a potential buyer.

A ride on my buddy's GS back in '81 convinced me to buy a big street bike for my first road bike instead of the dual sports I was test riding.

I think it's an anti-junker in the yard law. You have to keep it registered with the state if it us undergoing repair or refurbishment. If you let it lapse totally, you have to jump a lot of hoops and pay big fees to get it registered to the road again. If the PNO was maintained, I think it's a simple matter to re-activate the registration and get a tag on it once it is roadworthy.

That's a pretty machine.

I had a friend in the USAF who had one.
Great bike. Got to ride it flat out on the autobahn on more
than one occasion!

The engines on those early GS bikes were nearly indestructible.
They were stronger than the later 4-valve engines.

I had a GS550 for a few years. Great bike.

My first bike was a 77 GS400. At one point had a big bore kit, performance cam, bigger carbs, etc. Would run up to 10,500 rpm. Was a 1200 Sportster killer.

Gorgeous machine and I used to subscribe to bat just for the eye candy; however, regardless of the seemingly low opening on many items, the vast majority eventually sell for prices reserved for those of you who have retired early or have medical initials after your name  :boozing:

I agree, the square headlight models were just, ugh. Come to think of it, I'm of the same opinion of the Guzzi square headlight models. There's something wrong with rectangular headlights, it just ain't natural.

One of my favorite details is the round camshaft cap at each end of each cam.
My wire wheeled GS750 was just about the perfect road machine- a revvy engine with plenty of power, great handling, reliable as a rock and a comfy seat. I still have the valve shim tool in my tool box, unused.  I only sold the bike because I wanted to try something different after having several inline fours from 400 to 1100 CC.
My susie was exactly like this one:

A friend of mine bought a new  77 which he then rode cross country and back. Then he had a Yoshimura 860 ( I think) big bore kit and cams, 4 into 1 ,put on it and it would run away from GS1000's then they put on the nitrous....

I dont hate it. The seat needs some work to better mate with the tank and the side covers do stick out like a sore thumb, they look terribly out of place. Otherwise I like it.

I do wonder about chrome bores, I think this guy believes they are no big deal per previous comments he's made? But perhaps the engine has stock iron liners? I dont know enough about round-fin 1000's to know the difference.

I checked the VIN. With a VG prefix it’s a V1000, either a convert, G5 or SP.  My guess is SP. In any event iron liners.

I’m interested in how this bike is put together since I’m about to embark on converting an SP to a stripped lemans type bike and want to see what works and what doesn’t. I like the handlebars and gauges.  Don’t like the seat/tank/sidecovers.  Really like the pipes. Don’t like the Suzuki type rotor drilling.  I’m really interested  in what everyone here thinks.

It's OK, I'd ride it!

The seat needs some work to better mate with the tank and the side covers -- That's a LeMans seat made by GAMAN, I have one.

If you quadruple it you’ll pay what I did for my G5.  Then I started spending money.

It's your bike, do what you like!  But IMHO...a Lemans "tribute" bike needs a fairing. And yes that seat looks like it's about to swallow the tank.  Why the colour scheme looks wrong: First, this bike can't make up it's mind whether it's red bike with black trim, or a black bike with red trim. Secondly, gloss black for the fenders and headlight shell, but mat black for the tank?  Look at the front fender, then the starter, the rear fender, then imagine the MOTO GUZZI badge on gloss black tank sides. 100% better.

The style police need to slap somebody, because mat really tanked (pun intended) the look.

Picking some nits: The random loose individual wires under the instruments, different shade of the tach face vs the speedo face, the rear brake switch directly on the caliper. I wonder how constantly bouncing up and down will affect the switch life. It's probably there because the brakes have been de-linked.

BTW, what happened to the right handlebar switch assembly?

It needs someone sympathetic to finish it. It's a sheep in wolves clothing and it's crying for some mods to the drivetrain besides the BUB exhaust. Bet it sounds great.

To me, it looks like a bike that was assembled from a pile of parts the owner had lying around the shop or found at his friends' shops.

Nothing wrong with that, but he shouldn't expect a premium price for it.

I don't object to the drilled discs, per se, but if it were mine I'd swap them R for L.

Nothing that's "wrong" with it couldn't be fixed by someone with a different pile of parts.
