Bummer

John Henry

That is a bummer...R.I.P. Dusty Hill...and Godspeed.

Maybe this is why recently on BB King's Bluesville radio station, I have heard several new songs by Billy F. Gibbons, of course also of ZZ Top fame...

Damn, That sucks .I like many others here , Im sure, have grown up with ZZ Topp 's music. I was lucky to see them perform live twice , in Tucson. Both times,at smaller venues, and  they brought the house down !  RIP Dusty Hill.
Rick.

In my imagination, if you got Charlie, Dusty and Luap in the same room with ZZ Top, I would not be able to tell you who is who.......

Hopefully I will meet them (Charlie, Dusty, and Luap) someday and they won't let me down.

Who the hell will replace them.
I was witnessing a local two piece hose “band” a few nights back, they were utterly atrocious..! Each time they finished a song, you could hear one person give two hand claps, then embarrassingly slink down in their chair. They even tried AC/DC’s “Long Way To the Top” on a bleeding ukelele..! All you could hear was the ceiling fan squeaking and the guy out front said “THANKYOU VERY MUCH, we’ll be here all week....
Then he actually got out his Les Paul copy and staggered through “Tush...”

https://youtu.be/KCLXy-vSu3o

Rough as guts, but 3/4 of the mob got on their feet and danced right in the band’s face, I felt happy for the guy.
That Texas Blues has it all.....A Arrr...Arrr...Arrr. ..Arrr...

There is a tremendous art involved in holding it down like he did.  Most bass players overplay their stuff or simply can't generate the sound Dusty could.  Saw them many times and marveled how he could make mostly three cord groove all night when most others lose it by the third song.

yeah I used to think I didn't realize they were that old to have died. Then as I became older I started to think they were too young to die. Might have to play some ZZ today.

Rest in peace Dusty! I bought their first album when it came out in '69 and I think my favorite was "Rio Grande Mud" although I liked all of them. When I  was driving through the Hill country to see if I could find my grandparents old ranch near Banderas (Texas Trails Ranch) I happened to drive over to La Grange. I stopped before going into town and stopped at a cafe' and asked if I was near the town that was in the ZZ Top song. The waitress answered 'you mean the chicken ranch'? I said yes, and she affirmed that this was the town/area. The brothel has been gone for some time but the town of La Grange is quite nice and there is an excellent Civil War museum in the old water tower. The curator was a great guy in that he had that Texas drawl yet in '67 he went to Haight Ashbury to experience the hippie thing...We played many ZZ Top songs but in the band that is pictured we did "Francine" among others. But ZZ made their version of the blues their own. In a three piece band bass is so crucial as to have enough going on to allow the lead to have the foundation to successfully pull off the solo and leave enough for the vocals.  I am the debonair one in the lower left hand corner...

I've seen ZZ Top more times than I can remember.  Since I was in high school and their first record had come out, opening for Humble Pie (Clem Clemson replacing Frampton) in Tulsa.  And another band with M Mitchell and female singer/guitarist, IIRC.

After that, many times.  One especially good show was at the Civic Center in OKC for the Rio Grande Mud tour, clean cut and duded out in rhinestone western attire, longhorns mounted on their amps and just absolutely rocking the place down.  What a show.

Dusty was originally from my Hometown.  His family lived outside the Como community here in Hopkins county. His mother lived in the Cedar Springs Neighborhood here in Sulphur Springs until she died.  He survived two other brothers,  Rocky and Sandy.
I have seen him driving his Toyota pickup around town, but never bumped into him like my friend did in the Bealls store.  I've seen several shows through the years and have always been a fan.
R.i.p. Dusty
