I would imagine the only image I project is that I don’t take myself too seriously.

I know I do. It's not intentional either. I'm 6'4 and 275 pounds with what my wife calls an angry resting face. I've heard the same thing again and again " those guys were such and such or we were in a tight spot, we wish you were there with us.."    Why the Fu** would I want to get hit in the face is my first thought. Fights suck and getting hit hurts.
As for motorcycle gear I'm more likely to get mistaken for a Power Ranger than a S&M Pirate.

You are a normal sized guy. I'm 6'4" at 220 lbs. I've heard it too. Then once in a while some drunk guy decides it would be a good idea to beat on me. I try not to loose my sense of humor as I protect myself and most of the time the guy didn't really want to fight. As a psychological weapon and as a tool I carry a boxing mouth guard in my motorcycle jacket. Slip that in and smile at the miscreant is one way I foster an image of someone that should be left alone. I'm starting to look like what I am, a crippled up old guy.

When I commute or tour (regardless of bike) I am wearing HI-VIZ with the most protection I am willing to spend money on.

When riding the local country lanes I dress for comfort and enjoyment.

When I knowingly want to present an image it is usually a confusing one like wearing my Triumph branded jacket on my Harley, or leather jacket and chaps on my dual sport.

I only wear the half helmet if I know I am going to be on slow roads in the heat of summer.

I have 12 feet of closet dedicated to motorcycle gear so I do like to dress the part.  Race leathers to Kevlar lined jeans and Kevlar lined flannel shirt.  One piece hi-vis cordura/gore-tex riding suit to mesh pants and jacket that I can wear over shorts and a T-shirt.  Full gauntlet race gloves to mesh armored gloves.  Full Face Carbon Helmet, to Modular Helmet, to Half helmet.

Always evolving.  Tried the black leather thing.... NOPE.  Until recently it was "frugally ATGATT" with my X-Element textile coat & pants & on-sale Bell, but, through no small bit of luck I have recently acquired a Tourmaster LEATHER jacket (used, er, "vintage".... my first leather riding jacket, ever) & an actual Snell-approved Scorpion helmet, kewl red/white/green graphics & all.  Secretly hoping they take at least a decade or 2 off my "image".....

Anyone who has combed their hair, shaved, or trimmed their beard has thought to some extent about what kind of image they put forth.

When I was a kid that image was usually one of nonconformity (of one type or another).

I might suggest that most anyone who rides a motorcycle probably shares that to some extent.

I would further suggest most who ride Guzzis do to an ever greater extent.

But if you've put deodorant on before leaving the house, you've thought about it.

Carefully cultivated images:

I did feel pretty good a while back when a guy approached  me when I was wearing my leather jacket that I bought in the 80 and commented that my jacket looked like it had been around some. Probably won't get a similar comment on my new Power Ranger outfit unless it is from a little boy.

I believe I look a little stupid in my worn, dirty, baggy, unshapely textile suit. At best like someone who has been riding for a while to get here and intends to ride for quite a bit more before he calls it a day, and is not too interested in stopping for coffee and gossip.

The roadster looks and sounds like a no-nonsense bike  -  carbs, huge tank, solo seat, spoked wheels, matte mufflers; a rev happy twin. To go with that I’d like a not-so-baggy leather jacket for those nice, not too hot summer days. Might induce me to coffee and gossip more.

Been there done that ............

I'm 182cm and 90kgs  .... I used to be 110kg, muscular and about 2cm too tall for my hair.
I worked as a nightclub bouncer all the way through my University days as well as playing front row in a social Rugby Union Club.
Apparently I still have the "bouncer" look when I go to a pub and I rarely get troubled by the drunks or the crazies. I know what to look for and avoid trouble like the plaque.
When I do I've perfected the emotionless stare which usually deters them or informs their mates that they are annoying the wrong person.
That said I have a very, very long fuse and find it easy to just walk away.

Neil Young put it best  "It doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you"  (Old Man, Harvest)

As for motorcycle gear. I am a ATGATT rider, I have gravitated away from leather to textile as I find it is more versatile in Australia's climate where it can be 40C one minute and 10c the next. The ability to zip out liners and open vents is important.

Dumped the 'create an image' mindset along with my one piece blue and white Suzuki street racersuit. That and the plaid bell bottoms.
This was a while back.
I do wear an Italian themed Shoei full face and conservative Held leathers but it is a matter of comfort and quality over stylist statement.
I'm warm, protected and bugs wipe right off.

The image I project is in all honesty of a harmless old geezer. I've been told by loved ones that I'm about as intimidating as a newborn kitten.
I'm ATGATT when on the bike - dress for protection not attention. Old school leather jacket, black Draggin jeans, boots, gloves and white FF helmet.
Don't do group rides any more, mostly solo or with one trusted riding mate. My only three goals when riding are have fun, stay upright and avoid trouble.

I used to worry about what I looked like, but then I realised that it didn't make any difference to anyone. So I gave up wearing body shirts and flares and platform shoes and just wore Levis and press stud shirts and runners coz they were easier. Now that I'm old, I couldn't give a rats what I look like and wear leathers. sometimes, and textiles, sometimes; it just depends on what I'm going to be doing on the bike. Silly sausage Huzo thinks I look like a cop, my niece reckons I look like a teacher, but that's only because I come from a family of teachers. I reckon I just look like me.
