Whats in my Coils?
« on: December 04, 2021, 09:53:25 PM »
I thought some of you might be interested in seeing what's inside a coil
This was taken off my Convert, missing badly on one cylinder
The only thing I found was the case has bulged out at the end, note how the replacement is concave but this ones convex.

I initially thought it had lost all the oil so I weighed it carefully, it compared favourably. One thing I did notice was hairline cracks in the top, perhaps its leaking to ground.
I cut through the case with a hacksaw and dropped the parts into a plastic container

The coils can be separated quite easily, the primary is on the outside, Secondary inside, it connects to the bottom of the soft iron core which
is insulated from the case by the ceramic part you can see bottom right. The core connects to the top terminal via a Z shaped piece of steel.

The primary coil is wound from 22 BSWG, the secondary is probably the finest wire I have seen 33 BSWG (British Standard Wire Gauge)

I had always assumed that they are just step-up coils.  Is the visible (big) coil the primary?  I would think that would be the secondary.

What are dozen or so pieces of white metal?  Looks like aluminum (aluminum)- are the spacers?
Thanks for posting- this is interesting.

Yes the big coil is Primary
The metal pieces are Stalloy I believe Wikipedia says soft iron. they use thin strips of iron rather than a solid piece or the eddy currents would damp it down. Similar to transformers and electric motors
The only spacer is the white ceramic one at the bottom of the can, the top of the coils rest on the 4 knife edges you can see under the top.

Kettering ignition system coils are DC and not really step up transformers like  used on AC...
