strange things done under the midnite sun!
« on: June 19, 2022, 08:52:50 AM »
In the arctic summers are short...but the days are long! and tuesday is the longest day of the year. every year we have a "minight sun festival" with local events like a parade eskimo dancing a bank robbery(hmmm...) polar bear plunge and river raft race.
thusday and friday are my nights off, so me and my hun. rode out to the safety roadhouse 23mi southeast of nome:

from the sunrise in the north, to the sunset in...the north! about midnite (but not solar midnite, that is a bout 3am.) looking across the safety lagoon.

little ham on the porch, the last checkpoint on the iditarod trail, and good drinks too!

all the native chickees posing with a real cool sunrise in the background.

and about that bank robbery.....somethi ng i do every year: take over front street, rob the bank, have a shootout with wyatt earp, give candy(loot) to kids and then rob the bar on the way back up front street!

with my front street floozies

this was all Saturday but then it gets better:
good friend of mine calls me up just when i get snoozin about 6pm and say he is stuck on the side of a mountain. (newton peak) and to bring the chains. so up the mountain we go:

pesky glaciers and mud holes! always getting in the way!

chevy rescues ford...again!

and then its on to the top...we were most of the way anyway. met with the local wooly boogers( musk ox) who were coaxed into leaving

good view of nome and the bering sea on a day like this.

got back home just in time to go to work (drat!) but tomorrow (today) is the nome river raft race....will get you some pics later! "me and you and a brew or two! flotin down the river in a leaky old canoe!"
its not the end of the world...but you can see it from here!

Well, they say all those looooong winter nights make people up north a little crazy, that they take out during those looooong summer days.....

Thanks, Aklawok!
Great pics, and story, too!

Great post Ken. Still haven't run across a Musk Ox in the wild yet. Though I did get uncomfortably close to a Polar bear once.

update todays nome river raft race my hun took over 200 pics with my phone but the phone got "drunk" on her somewhere down the way,. but here are a few:
was 70f. out @dexter about 13 mi. out of town course is about 4mi. to haul out. takes about 2-2 1/2hr. allowing for liberal beer breaks.

water balloons/cannons/buckets are the norm...none are spared the gauntlet!
/

some rafts are small some large all are required homemade.
most of the river is shallow and gravel, sometimes need to walk the boat. saw some huge grayling here, no salmon yet...predicted to be a very low run this year.

this is as far in the water i could lure my hun out to, she chickened out too cold! but she did fall in later!

we went down in a small zodiac not part of the race as many do in kayaks and canoes, but still lots of fun!
most of the pics are not distinct from these, so kept it short.

as i have lived here more than half my life, i have still only seen a fraction of it. only a small fraction is accessible by road. the rest by air or water/snow only. my one piece of advice for anyone planning to visit is: the REAL alaska doesn't begin until you LEAVE anchorage! so come up and see me some time.

Very nice, thanks for that. Very different to my part of the world.
And here am I in Oz on the day of winter solstice complaining about a "cold" 22 deg Celsius day

Haha! Another unsuccessful bank robbery for the "Richard Rowe gang"!
Knew they were filming but was in a rush at the time.
All the kids shouting "lock him up!!!" Was new. The truth is this was almost completely improvised, all were last minute volunteers! The "front street floozies " we're a group of itinerant nurses from hospital that just happened to show up.
