Got her out detailed it, and mounted the top case that was buried in  the garage and took some pics of my lil beauty!  Then did about a 100 miles on her, whata fun machine!

A beauty for sure. I had a Convert and put straight pipes with fish tails on it I was at a generic rally and they sent me for beer When I returned some said I thought you'd blow it up as you never shifted it. I didn't tell 'em it was an auto.

Yeah, Dusty knows me.

Your bike is a beauty for sure! They look very elegant in black/chrome. The motorcycle equivalent to a "tuxedo"! Thats exactly how mine looked before I decided to re paint it, but the paint was not in great shape like yours. You dont find many that still have the oem trunk, and mounting hardware.   :thumb:

I can't believe I can't seem to scrounge up a pic of mine...although the poor thing would look mighty scruffy next to those two. But it's well-loved and well-used! I've had a bicycle rack mounted to it for years!

I've put about equal miles (~40k) on both the Convert and the Cal 2 Auto. Loved the Convert so much I got a Cal 2. Looking at Curt's profile photos of both, you can tell that the Convert's saddle is/was superior, the best ever put on a motorcycle. The extra wheelbase of the Cal 2 makes it feel much more effortless on the highway, although a Convert is hard to beat. Convert continually spewed oil out it's breather, Cal 2 never spewed a drop. Convert has those cool round heads.

BUT, the Cal 2 is to me the epitome of cool, highway-cruiser style that still LOOKS like a real motorcycle, without a hint of plasticky, angular, sunken-seat/Harley-wannabe-bandwagonesque, unless you count the front fender, but I'll give that a pass. With the advent of the Cal 3 the MG touring line lost it's appeal to me. A real under-rated gem.

I realize that if I actually rode a later-model MG tourer farther than around the block I'd probably be singin' a different tune, but ignorance is bliss.....

Oh-both Curt and Rick's bikes are GORGEOUS.

Nice bikes guys, great to see them in such good condition!
I wont show my scruffy dog eared shitter here, you can look for it on other posts. It looks like a cross between a wire wheeled Convert & a Cali II because of the square barrel LM 1000 motor. The gravel rash on the Spada fairing doesnt do it any favours, but it does work well.

I bought my Convert from a previous Missouri Rep who was into Cal 2s, and when I rode mine back from Ohio to Phoenix (where I was living at the time), I stayed at his place. He had 2 2s, one he bought out of sympathy because nobody wanted it, and he couldn't sell it, because it had over 100k on it. Purred like a kitten.

Take a long stare at the 1st photo at the top of this thread, and then tell me that's not the coolest, cleanest set of lines on a touring bike...of any era.

If it's not, it's mighty close!   Great bikes and some great pictures of them.

I must say that I rode a friends Convert for 6 months, and I never really got used to it.   I'm sure that if I took a cross-country trip on one, I might feel differently ....

I am getting ready to bolt a sidecar on my Cal II auto. Everyone says autos make great tugs, I am hoping it does.
I plan to paint it Chrysler inferno red to match the cal II. :thumb:

If you look closely at the front fork on mine, you'll see a fork brace I installed last winter. Took a LOT of careful grinding to be able to install it without interfering with the fender, but MAN what a difference in all cornering spectrums, especially fast sweepers.

Looking at the pic now, "fast sweepers" just doesn't seem to apply, but they ARE possible.

Here is a slightly mysterious bike of which I have received a picture. The owner says he thinks it is an automatic, but doesn't know since he only inherited it and never saw it run.
He sends a picture showing a cooler on the front of the bike frame. Is that the tranny cooler for or just an aftermarket oil cooler?
Is this the rare Cal II 1200 Convert o just a regular CalII 5 spd? It obviously does not have the word 'Convert' on the side cover and I do not have a pic of the other side.
