Best live player

Stevie Ray Vaughn , Mark Knofler , or Terry Kath ?

I know , lots of other great players , but come on , these three were somehow different, capable of transporting the listener to another place . Heck , Mark is still doing it .

Was lucky enough to see stevie live as back up to greg allman. Great show .  Also saw mark with dire straights another great one. But my vote for best live show, strictly  from a  musician ship perspective, would be the Tedeschi/ Derik trucks band. Incredible talent in that band. Was bummed we couldn't see them again this summer in vermont.

I'll vote for SRV.  He's the only one I saw live, but was truly brilliant.  Seeing anyone who is that seamlessly connected to what he/she is doing is always special.   Another of my other top favorites that I've seen is Angus Young AC DC.  He simply is one with his guitar- cannot imagine how he does all that he does and still sounds like that.

Of the three, I've never seen Mark.  I'd certainly like to.  I own more of his records than the other two.  The SRV shows were great.  It was many years ago since I saw Terry with Chicago.  I think Chicago was a band that played very close to the recordings whereas Stevie was upfront and flamboyant.  I very much like Mark, particularly the live record with Emmy Lou.  Its not just his guitar style but the songs he writes.

All in all, I have to agree with Lucian.  Although Dusty likes rib me about TTB- not sure what that is about.  And I always try to see Dead & Co with John Meyer.  And don't miss Los Lobos if you ever get a chance, particularly if you get to hear their less mainstream Latin inspired stuff (Hildalgo and Rosas just cook).

We aren't talking bands , just that one incandescent guitar player , that person that completely dominates the stage .

The reason I always come back to these three is this , while everyone borrows from other players , Mark , TK , and Stevie were somewhat unique , Stevie had a couple of copycats although they faded quickly , Mark and TK , well , no player has even really tried .

They all play just happens they all play together sometimes.

Its also interesting that we tend to vote for musical talents and styles we like and discount those we do not. I can't stand SRV. I think he sucks. He might be awesome or original but I'd rather hear the house mariachi  band at the local Mexican restrauant as they are at least tolerable to my ears.

Another thing you hear from fans when their musician doesn't get the accolades they think proper the word word "underrated" get heaved out there.

Watch Roy Clark or Junior Brown or the unknow 8 year old on YT. they all have talent.

Sticking to the question at hand it's got to be Mark Knoffler. Widest range of style and song writing abilities. His collaboration with Chet Atkins simply outstanding.

Mark has been given the gift of years that Stevie and TK didn't get .

Still , the question is who was or is the greatest live player , who could just take over the stage and keep the audience mesmerized . Maybe to some extent taste comes into play , but I heard the aforementioned Roy Clark and Junior Brown live , along with Jeff Beck , and while all are talented , they didn't command my attention like Mark , Stevie, or TK . With Beck my gaze is always on Tal .

It's like asking "Who is the most attractive woman?" There are too many types, each attractive in their own way, to pick just one; you'd have to pick one of each type.

With that as context, it's Leo Kottke, Angus Young, and Mark Knopfler.   There may be other opinions, but this one is correct, count on it.

As far as artists I've actually SEEN #1 would be Clapton, Garcia, and Jeff Beck. But I really lean more to the acoustic side like Hot Club of San Francisco, to ME Paul Mehling is putting on a SHOW! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6_EO359eEs

Tony Rice, Doc Watson and Norman Blake are others I've actually SEEN, oh and Leon Redbone of course!

of course JEff Beck.  Much of the show is a continuous guitar and drum solo going on simultaneously.  Of course I love it.  Then Jeff will break into something soulful bending strings and weeping.

Best live lead guitarist that I ever saw was Angus Young. Period.  Stood for the first song and never sat down for 3 hours, like everybody else in the auditorium. Hard to imagine the amount of effort he sustains year after year, concert after concert.

There are an unlimited number of great guitar players as the contributions pour in on this thread.  My other live favorites are David Gilmore, Joe Walsh, and a local Ohio boy Phil Keaggy (Glass Harp).  I will stop there.

The three you mentioned in the first post are extraordinarily talented.

If I were to pick just one guitar player though, Mick Taylor is the one.

Saw Rory Gallagher at a small venue, Lizard's, in Lansing, Michigan in about 1974.  I've seen better technically better players live, but Rory came to ROCK.  No pyrotechnics, no lasers, just energy and nothing held back.

Of those three mentioned in the first post, I'd say Knopfler - so versatile in all respects.

Glad Joe Walsh was mentioned, I think he's great.

Does anyone remember the guy who played with Jackson Browne 40 years ago?
I can't even recall his name right away, but I miss him, he was wonderful on stage. Maybe a bit low key for this thread?

Hum one man and a guitar? Jimi Hendrix. Saw him Keel Auditorium in St. Louis 1969. Oh I just saw the player has to be alive. Oh Well. Hendrix is still alive in my mind. 🎸

We had him at the University I attended in '68. The auditorium held only 900. What a show. His recordings are tame in comparison. He also had a very melodious voice which didn't come through on his records. I also saw him at a large venue, not the same.  He liked to play to smaller groups that really got into his music. I was very sad when he passed. I was in the Army at the time, I still remember when I heard the news.
