That's a drummer Dusty
Mingus. The answer is always Mingus.
Jaco, and John paul jones are up there for sure. Lately Ive been mostly impressed by Edgar Meyer. Not rock or jazz like most of you are listing [but I do think he does some jazz..] Mostly bluegrass and some classical... But he is real good, and has a great sound and style.
: Tal Wilkenfeld , she was the Tal referenced in the first post , brilliant on her own . Dusty
Beck's young female player was Tal W from Australia. A huge talent. Welkenfeld was her name or something close to it. The Crossroads CD series has her all over the shows in some years. She's really melodic and in the pocket at the same time.As for bass players, well, we are the bridge between rhythm and harmony. And I can't tell you how many times I had to rescue some Billy Cobham wannabe after a "wild ride" as to where the "1" is.Bass has really evolved over the past 30 years or so. So many have taken the slap bass techniques of the old upright players to completely new areas. It's been fun to observe it for sure. And the list of names is almost endless for super talented players.
I can't believe no one has mentioned Esperanza Spalding. Not Jaco, but she is current, certainly cool and she sings while accompanying herself. Also a bit prettier than Pastorius.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aRC3YY3svs
Lots of great bass players in Jazz and R&R , but for whatever reasons I gravitate to Tal , Esperanza and Tina . Dusty
Unless there are more than one bass players named Tal or Esperanza .... I guess Tina is a mystery also Dusty
I assumed Weymouth.-AJ
Rhonda Smith was playing with Jeff Beck last year. Tal hasn't been with Jeff for a few years now. Rhonda was playing with Prince.I took some photos from Tulsa show last year
