On the Jazz side Christian McBride is hard to beat. He has a great program on Serious XM Real Jazz channel called Conversations with Christian. Lots of entertaining guests / musicians.

On the rock/blues side how about Berry Oakley and Rick Danko. Of course Jack Bruce who has been mentioned a bunch already.

I forgot Stanley Clarke.  Saw his band and The Dixie Dregs opened for him.  Wild night for hits and fingers.

I watched a TV special of Jeff Beck playing live in some bar.  He had a young lady with a mass of curly hair playing bass for him.

She was awesome.

I made a note of her name at the time, but have since lost/forgotten it.

+1 for Tim Bogert .. and the young girl who played with Jeff Beck was Tal Wilkin .. something ... I think. Gotta shout out, though, for the Late Great Allen Woody!

Jaco, and John paul jones are up there for sure.  Lately Ive been mostly impressed by Edgar Meyer. Not rock or jazz like most of you are listing [but I do think he does some jazz..] Mostly bluegrass and some classical... But he is real good, and has a great sound and style.

Beck's young female player was Tal W from Australia.  A huge  talent.  Welkenfeld was her name or something close to it.  The Crossroads CD series has her all over the shows in some years.  She's really melodic and in the pocket at the same time.

As for bass players, well, we are the bridge between rhythm and harmony.  And I can't tell you how many times I had to rescue some Billy Cobham wannabe after a "wild ride" as to where the "1" is.

Bass has really evolved over the past 30 years or so.  So many have taken the slap bass techniques of the old upright players to completely new areas.  It's been fun to observe it for sure.  And the list of names is almost endless for super talented players.

Thx for that!

Another player that I have never been able to put a name to......he was the bassist for Ian Hunter during Mick Ronson's last tour - a BIG black fellow that played a fretless bass.   Absolutely blew me away.

Whadda 'bout Paul?

Ok, there are some technically far more proficient players, but for musicality and inventiveness, he was (and still is) a great player.  His melodic genius with the little Hofner (and Rickenbacker and Fender Jazz.) in the 60's was unmatched and drove many a hit.

And if you ask "Paul who? ", a pox on you.

Rhonda Smith was playing with Jeff Beck last year.  Tal hasn't been with Jeff for a few years now.  Rhonda was playing with Prince.

I took some photos from Tulsa show last year

Rhonda is a monster.  I like Gale Ann who played with Bowie, too.
David Brown in the second Santana band was great, too.  Made every song move-just like Bennie does for Carlos now.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Esperanza Spalding. Not Jaco, but she is current, certainly cool and she sings while accompanying herself. Also a bit prettier than Pastorius.

Jean-Jacques Burnel of the Stranglers. Always an inspiration. Has been riding Triumph triples since the 70s as well. My favorite bass player and the reason I have a black Precision with a maple neck.

Does anybody actually listen to the to the stuff people post on threads like this?

Christian McBride has been mentioned a time or two now. I just happy to see an Irish bassman get a break now and then.

Give a listen to his rendition of Fried Pies.

1st ya gotta have good wood!
Ray Brown is terrific in any music venue. Have seen him many times, Including with a few great singers. From the mid 50's 'til retiring, 5 yrs. ago. I arranged nearly all my business trips to coincide with chasing small groups to big band jazz, when it popular. Most weekends, if you get nearby, you'll still hear it.   R3~
