Gearbox dilema
« on: December 02, 2020, 07:58:26 AM »
Gearbox on my Breva 750 ie 2004  is almost gone...
I have opportunity to buy V65 5 speed gearbox  that (seller told me) will be straight forward fit ...

But...

Primary gearing on Breva is 16/21 and on a V65 is 15/22...
Everything else is the same...

So...
How big would be the difference??

Thanks

Very little. I went from a V65 to a 750 in the AeroLario. Hardly noticeable, except it was quiet.  Just a heads up, the V65 transmissions were afflicted (or not) by Guzzi's recommendation of using less oil to keep it from puking out the breather. 5th gear was affected. If it whines, there is a serious problem.

I see no problem.

Take the primary from your Breva into the V65 gearbox.

This can be done "relative" easy.

Well...hard noise in 4th gear...it is not whining...more similar like machine for milling coffee or nuts...
Under the 3500rpm...you can't hear a engine...only gearbox
And same noise in 3rd...but not so loud like in 4th...
The other gears are fine

I caught his post in the Swap Meet - I believe he says he had serious whines, particularly in 4th. If there's not a significant price differential, he could be better off with a low mileage box from a 1TB V7, but the V65 box would work. When I replaced the clutch on my 2014 Special not so long ago, I found the hardening on the 5th gear dogs flaking off. There was no whine, so I cleaned up the box, replaced most of the bearings & put it back in. Working fine. I've since managed to get hold of the smaller gear at a decent price, the larger is, so far, substantially more expensive. I'll keep an eye out over the next few years for one at a reasonable cost, but another whole box might end up being cheaper.

The V7C developed a gearbox whine at around 17,000km, the comment was that guzzi gearboxes whine, but as my whine was deemed "excessive", the bearings were replaced under warranty. There was a known problem of a bad batch of bearings in some of the V7/Breva boxes around 2010.
