83 Laverda RGS
« on: February 27, 2023, 10:29:10 AM »
Not MG oriented but brought back memories for me and well as I'm sure a few other's here...  Loved riding the Laverda from the hands on Laverda Dealer - Lance Weil, EU racer from the 1960's in Costa Mesa CA back in the day..  This one is for sale - https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/mcd/d/seattle-fs1983-laverda-rgs-miles/7593100085.html

Nice bike! Best suited to the tall guys, at 5’-9” it’s a bit tall for me.

My slight knowledge of Laverda says that's not a bad price.  I've seen lesser machines go for more...much more!

Anyone seriously considering buying this Laverda might want to give Wolfgang a phone call at Columbia Car and Cycle in Nakusp to discuss the bikes condition. Wolfgang is a top notch, super honest guy and I doubt anyone knows more about Laverda in North America.

OK Ben....Here's mine. Beg to differ with Canuck. At 5'8'' I don't find this too tall. The RGS and RGA have a new lower frame than prior triples like the Jota, 3C's and the 1200's. A bit top heavy maybe and extremely limited steering range.

Interesting throttle gizmo on the bike in the ad. Anyone recognize it and know of it's function?

I’d really like one, it’s on my short list…. but I don’t want to own and maintain another bike.  Drat. And it’s cheaper than a new roof on the house.

The story of the fairing mounted gas cap is as follows: Laverda wanted to sell the bike in US and in California which was introducing evaporative emissions regs for bikes.  They called Alfa Romeo, “Can you help?” Alfa sent their US based engineering staff, the director and another engineer to Breganze.  “We’re a long way from home and need to get this done. How can we come up with a fuel tank evap system quickly?” The answer was to use existing car parts, a Fiat filler tube and cap had the fittings for the canister hose, and put a car style door on the fairing.  Easy and cool, just what Laverda needed. Alfa got the rights to some Laverda patents in return.

As a show of appreciation Laverda later gave an RGS to the head US Alfa guy (Don Black) and it was he who told me the story.  He was not a tall man so if I recall correctly he gave it to his deputy, who had come up with the idea.

Great bit of firsthand history there, Tusayan! I had just assumed that it was a product of RG Studios who designed the Bayflex bodywork.

I know where there's  nice silver Executive... Has electronic ignition and is pretty well sorted.
