Reflections on my next bike...
« on: March 21, 2024, 01:15:07 PM »
I have been giving a bit of thought to this lately and although my 2004 Breva doesn't have near as many miles as my last 2004 Breva, in a while I might look to change. If I can afford it, it will be a V7 850. It has the style, size (I'm 5 foot 3), can have accessories for touring easy enough such as a small screen, hard luggage (HB by preference) and a centrestand. It has a decent chunk of torque and hp over the Breva, and a sixth gear, all to make a good difference on long rides. Others considered;

V100 Mandello - love it but its a spicy meatball at the price plus the extras I would have to buy (luggage as minimum). Also to reverse it into my "bike house" might be a bit of a problem.

New Stelvio - too tall - too expensive for me.

V85 Strada - now I REALLY quite like the idea of this but its a tall bike still, and much more bulky that a V7.  Will maybe have a test ride. We will see. Looks a hugely capable touring bike.

Have you considered the V 85 TT? with the Stelvio, prices on the TT should come down in the used market. I have seen some sweet deals on some, and am tempted myself. Its a well proven machine, and cheaper to accesorize, I think

Check out a v9,cheaper than v85 and by all accounts a more mellow engine.

I would happily have settled for a V9 engined version of mine, but I’m happy with what it is.
I have never ridden a V9, but will if I get the chance.

The current V9 and V7 engines are afaik identical.

The magical different one was the first generation V9 (2017-20ish).

What KevM said.
Ride a 1st gen V9, Roamer or Bobber.
You’ll like it.

After 10 years, I recently SOLD "Moby Dick", aka, The Great White Whale, (my 2014 Victory Vision Tour).  It was a great long distance touring bike, but I am no longer riding two up...so off it went.

I will keep my '98 Centauro GT for now, but have been thinking about a retro  Triumph T100 Bonneville, or a Kawasaki W800.

One of my riding buddies wants me to get a VESPA 250 or a similar scooter to join him on the 2025 "coast-to-coast" Scooter Cannonball Rally....400 miles a day on secondary roads for 8 days!!   :thumb:

We'll see what happens...    :boozing:

The Bonnie and W800 may look similar, but are very different machines. The Triumph is quite modern in how it feels and rides, whereas the W800 could have been made in the 1970s and not made many headlines. It is better finished, though, and is easier to maintain than any modern Triumph.

Yes, they are different machines, agreed....

I like the Triumph, well, because it's a TRIUMPH! :thumb: :boozing:

I like that Bevel Drive (like a Ducati...) on the W800 and wonder if some after-market company will come up with a "glass port hole opening" for that Bevel Drive?

The Roamer and the Bobber really don't do it for me looks wise. I'm really more a V7 person.  I will be asking for another ride of my freinds V7 Mk 3 this summer to see how that compares to the Breva. There are some bargains around. 6 gears! Wow!

You might want to consider a well cared for W650, which were limited to just 2000 and 2001. They look more traditional, and still have that sexy bevel drive…

Both the Triumph T100 and the W800 Kawasaki have 360 degree crankshafts, which I think is interesting...

In an engine with a 360 degree crankshaft, both pistons move up and down at the same time. :thumb:

However, the firing interval is offset between cylinders, with one of the cylinders firing during the first crankshaft rotation and then the other cylinder in the following rotation.

Assuming you are talk about buying new? If so why not consider used and save a bundle?

I bought a higher end adventure bike last year for the original owner. It has 18,602 miles on it, like new and every option/package available. The OP had almost $30,000 into it, I bought it for under $17,000. While he had the luxury of putting on the first 18,602 miles he also paid a $13,000+ premium to do so.

Yes...I was talking about buying *NEW*, as I tend to keep bikes for years.  However, you are right, one can save a bundle with a clean, well cared for, used example....We'll see... :thumb:

IMHO , I’m very happy with my 21 Centanario . Kitted out with H-B side cases & rear rack , a capital windshield & aftermarket heated grips . Oh as I’ve got 2 V7’s I got 30l bags & a set of 42 l bags for longer camping trips . I also installed ICON rear shocks . The stock units were adequate solo but weak loaded. The only other modification was to de-cat the exhaust. It eliminated the heat & didn’t affect performance, Oh & sounds a bit less asthmatic.
