Winner, winnern chicken dinner!! Friend of mine had one before he got into Guzzi's. It did just barely beat my 650 Bonnie.

Early XS 650s had front drums. And a compression release.

Glad that got settled. No TX or SX650 engine ever looked like that. It's not as handsome as the 650, either, IMO.

That's not a Yamaha XS650, looks more like a Honda, but I am not as familiar with those. It is definitely not a Yamaha though. I used to have the full range of XS400, XS650, 750 Triple, and the King Kong XS1100. I still have the 750 and 1100 in storage, look forward to the day I can get them up and running again.

Swing and a miss...  Good to know we're on the same team, Steve.  I'll buy the next beer.

We had a TX750 in the mix for years, one Dad brought home for me to fix for him.  Never happened.

Someone I knew back in the day asked me to fix his. I don’t remember what was wrong with it but I was unable to help him out for some reason. What a giant POS. Nothing like the 650.

My Uncle Gary bought one and had me try to keep it running for him. Oil constantly leaked onto the points, it had timing chain noise and ran quite hot. This was back in the late '70s, so there wasn't the easy access to information on fixes that there is now. The local Yamaha dealers were no help either. He got rid of it during a period when I had it running fairly well.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_TX750

I see in the write-up that the early ones had "a spring loaded camchain tensioner".  This was  a weak spot.  The nut on the spring was pulled bo tension the spring.  Of course, sooner or later the weld gave way and anyone in the middle of a long trip lunched their motor as the camchain wore away the alloy and the dust was pumped through the motor.  A guy I knew came up with a fix where he put the nut on the other side of the spring.  He would come out and use my gas welder to sweat the nut on to hold it in place while he re-assembled it.  Once it was back together the tension held it in place anyway.

He did quite a lot of them....
