You never forget your first JJ. Mine was a 1983 R100CS I bought for $2500 with 3500 miles on it. It was sitting in a Kawasaki dealership with the horn wire caught in the timing cover causing a short. It seemed so strange at the time but I grew to love it very quickly.
JJ ..... in the spirit of this 'my first BMW' theme ......Well, guys and gals ...... my first Beemer wasn't a flat twin, but a first year edition of the K bikes to be sold in the USA ..... a 1985 K100RS.It was a leftover, purchased in March of 1986.I'd gotten back into biking with a 1983 Virago, but while walking to a customer meeting in downtown Pittsburgh, I passed a BMW the likes of which I'd never seen. A few weeks later, I owned my first K bike. They had their issues, mostly heat management. Aside from that, I loved this bike. Put 65,000 miles on in three + years, and traded it on another K RS. Pic quality is horrible ....... I retrieved this photo from a Kodak Disk camera found in a tankbag I no longer used.Bobbe with me images
Your a lucky man JJ, that BMW was the top of the pack in my opinion back then and many of the marquee’s models are equal to the task today. I could only dream of owning such a bike back then. It had to wait until 2005 before I could straddle a Beemer. You sure have owned some fine machines in your time. I am curious to know how you rate your GL1000 that you have spoken of to the BMW?I have a soft spot for the 75-77 GL1000’s.
Yup, I’m with the K-bike crowd . 85 K100 , Std. The second week I had it got stopped 4 speeding . As the officer is handing me the citation & license back he remarks “If you can afford that bike you can afford this ticket” !
Thanks for your kind words, Jim! My '78 GL1000 was low slung, and FAST, but heavy...More of a straight line touring bike vs. a canyon carver...My R75/6 and my R80RT were not very fast, but fast enough, and they were light and nimble..and a pleasure to ride in the twisties...They were two completely different bikes, but I had fun with all of them!
