Why do people persist with "Mine is better than yours!"
« on: April 26, 2017, 08:36:37 PM »
You would think that after people graduated from high school and adolescence that they would GET OVER their insecurities and stop with the "Na na na na na Mine is better, bigger, faster, meaner, smarter, cooler than yours" stuff! You see these stupid cartoons on pickups and cars of a Ford kid peeing on a Chevy, or a Dodge kid doing it on everything else. My kind of trucks rule! YEA!!! Or something more stupid. Are people so insecure in their own skin that they have to revert to this behavior? I GUESS SO! Why???

Maybe it's sort of like the "My Team" thing.

In stadiums across the nation every Saturday and Sunday from September to January, millions of people gather, waving the pennants of Their Team!  and putting down The Enemy!  who is another football team.

Washington v Dallas, Michican v Ohio State, Georgia v Georgia Tech, the rivalries are intense.   People spend millions and billions of dollars on team spirit items - shirts, flags, footballs, foam costumes, and they get up in the stadium and act like The Enemy is a real enemy, really horrible, and Their Team! is the best, Be True To Your School and all that.

We don't think that's too unusual, matter of fact, a whole lot of people here probably indulge in that sort of rivalry.   Why should it be unusual in other interests and hobbies?

I think it has got to do with how one made the decision.

I bought my car by elimination, so I tend to think it is a better car than the other models in the comparison list.

I bought my Guzzi by heart, they are not the best bikes out there but I love them. It doesn't matter if one says his bike is better than mine, I won't get into the argument.

Maybe it has to do with that deadly sin, Pride.

Maybe someone is proud of their city or State and cheer for a sports club who represents them.

Maybe it's pride of ownership because someone plunked down a large sum of money on something.

And pride can lead to selfishness and other negative things.

Maybe I'm wrong 😆😆

Exactly.  If we we're all the same then we would all come to the same conclusion on what MC to own.  But since we are all individuals with different experiences, needs, personal shapes, priorities, etc. we don't think the same.  If we did all think the same our lives would be so boring it would be dreadful.  As we go thru life we experience vastly different things and that gives us different reasons for what we do next. These are reasons we cannot all think the same way.  At the same time over time we decide what is right in our life and what is not.  Then when someone else who has had different experiences than us in their life disagrees with our personal conclusions, we might vehemently disagree with their conclusions.  Then someone with more power than us has to decide who prevails.  Sometimes that decision is timeless, sometimes it's not.  If all this disagreeing happens on a low level that's not really harmful, then not much harm is really done.  If both parties agree it's normal to not always agree all the time then life can go on as if nothing really bad has happened.  A friendship may be tattered but life can go on without real damage.

Most of that are just people sharing their passions be it Jeeps or OBX, or the Phillies...

That isn't necessarily "mine is better bla bla bla" though it can be.

It is possible to root for a team or prefer a brand without pissing (literally or figuratively) on the others.

Just like it's possible to enjoy Guzzis without feeling the need to put down BMWs or Harleys.

In the end it's probably some vestigial tribal behavior in either case.

I can agree^^^...........I don't understand the frantic behavior of many sports fans for a game on TV they never actually played...I have seen guys come within an inch of punching each other over whether a Ford is better than a Chevy...Or the intense hatred of Harley Davidson shown on this site by some...
