Only 3,300 miles, all correct and stock with the unobtanium pieces.... Most desirable colorway... Concours winner... #001...

I bought mine sight unseen via an ad in the MGNOC classifieds around 95? from a guy in Wisconsin. I sent him a check for $5K and it showed up a week or so later from Allied and it looked pretty much like the photo he sent me. And he had been trying to sell if for awhile.

I remember calling Marsh in Connecticut around 94-95 looking for one and whoever answered  the phone was like, “nobody wanted them when they were new”

I have a photo of my wife standing next to a Brough at the British Show in Olney, Maryland back in the 90’s and the guy want $10k for the bike. Who knew?

Those bikes were expensive back then too though, or at least too expensive for me. But they would be a bargain if you could buy one for '90s prices with today's money!

I'd love a 1000S but not at the prices they seem to fetch. I've seen some pictures of some counterfeit versions which might be more realistic.

The seller states:
Early MG 1000S:
The Early 91 production from MG was roundly rejected throughout the MG distribution world wide. The bikes had Wrong design and accessory choices, Most importantly an engine that just didn’t perform (mentioned by others here)
Personally I couldn’t be happier as this lead to the 1993 1000S limited production, which was their answer to getting it right…. and boy did they. Fact, the 93 1000S will always be the most collectible and rarest in the line of this model.


I always thought the '91 "big valve" 1000S was the one to have and the '93 "world engine" was less desirable. And what does he mean by "wrong design and accessory choices"? Aren't they virtually identical other than the engine tune?

Doesn't really matter, as I'd never pay the kind of $$ they're bringing now.

For those of you whom have this model, could you measure the fork spacing on these to solve a mini-mystery in my head for good please? is it 180mm or 195mm? And are those dimensions for spoke or cast rims?

From what I've determined, spokes require 195 and the cast wheels take the 180. The 97 Cali that donated its front end and wires for my 1000S project is 195.

I too figured the 1990 was the more desirable model, not only for the hotter engine, but the older style gauges which look better in my opinion.

I used to walk thru Donaldson's in St. Louie back in the early 90's and walk past a 1000S and barely give it a glance. I DO remember thinking "why doesn't someone buy this thing?" I think I even sat on it, but I wasn't smitten by it's looks at that time. What an idiot I was. Young, single, money, nobody to tell me no......

I was absolutely smitten when I saw it in 91. I was young (53) single and with a trade in on with an almost new Mille I could have bought it.
But an hour later after Fran let me take it for a ride I found the ergos decimated my 6'5" frame.

When they were new I rode both. While the first ones were all big valve 40mm carb bikes and were absolutely ferocious, I found the later ones with the world engine very nice as well. They still had 36mm carbs and, if I remember correctly, 850 Lemans heads. They were still awfully fast and fun to ride.
I'd happily take either.
Show me a Le Mans IV and I'll show you a Le Mans 1000.

The 1000S is a retro classic introduced before retros were cool. I have owned my 91 big valve since new and have enjoyed it over the years. Here is what I have learned  about them, sourcing articles and a former employee at the importer in Lillington NC at the time. There was one container of 34  1991 Big valve1000S bikes brought in late 91 or early 92.  In that shipment 17 were black frame with orange stripes and 17 were green frame with green stripes. They were priced at over 9 thousand retail which was very expensive for a basic motorcycle in 91. There were no 92 Guzzis imported in 92 at all. In 93  3 containers totaling 102 green frame  mid valve 1000S models were brought in. I was at the AMA Superbike races in Charlotte NC in 92 where Guzzi had an impressive diisplay and a 1000S was presented. I knew right then I had to have one. When I returned home I called John Hoffman at Cycle Specialities in Athens GA and he had one in stock. I went the next day and made the deal.All of the 1000S models I have seen had the wire wheels, with the exception of one that had mags and the earlier instrument pod. I believe it was an import outside of our importer at the time. The 1000S was available from late 89-93 worldwide with the US only 2 years. There were three basic models available over the different years . The early ones which were green or orange, big valve and with optional cast wheels and the earlier instruments. The 91s with big valve and green or orange with updated instruments. Then the 93s with the VN motor, digital ignition,and36 mm carbs. I was lucky enough to ride my 91 back to back with a friend who had a 93. There is a significant difference in the motors. When the 91s fun meter hits 4000 rpms the motor pulls hard and breathes deep. The 93 sings right along but doesn’t’ have that hit. It is smoother though. The 1000S models sat in the showrooms in some cases for years. When the last one was sold them everyone wanted one. I have made a few updates to mine including a Bub Conto exhaust bought in the 90’s. That lets it breathe and sounds incredible. I changed the jetting to similar euro components and installed flat top carb tops. It also has a dyna ignition for no maintenance and stainless brake lines. It is a keeper!

When they first came out.  I was put off by the green model.  I was interested in the orange one but disappointed that the frame was black.  I wanted an orange frame.  Yeah.....I know....crazeee.  Years later I bought a '91 Greenie from Curtis at Harper's.  He knew I was adding to my collection of sporty Guzzis.  It resided at Harper's for a number of years with my '73 V7Sport and '89 LeMans V. 

That was #37.  #57 '91 came to the Pacific Guzzi Refuge by way of Honolulu from the original owner.  That bike made a Trans-Pacific/Trans continental run to eastern PA.   It ended back in Honolulu after that owner resold it to the original owner.  Fast forward....Rod who use to post here a number of years back decided to get rid of the his bikes.

That Greenie and a very low mileage '93 Cali III were shipped to the refuge in Kona to reside with the rest of the herd.

I bought my SPII new from Midway Cycles in Lillington and rode down there every Saturday until they closed, leaving only Moto America (the importer there). I rode the very first 1000S brought into the country. It didn't have the correct number of digits in the serial number so legally couldn't be sold. I always wondered what happened to it.

Amazed nobody bought this. There are buyers out there (here) for it, just bad timing. Amazing example.

Oh and for the "big valve" boys, agree with the general sentiment, but the 93 1000s works GREAT, nice n smooth n torqy through the low revs, pulls hard and long like a tractor should and delivers loads of fun and amazingly easy ride-ability.

I have always loved the 1000S models, big-valve, medium-valve, green & black or orange & black, but the bottom-line is if you had $15K-$20K disposable cash to buy another motorcycle today...you would have A LOT of great options! :laugh: :grin: :wink:
