Kansas Nut Run - Saturday, June 27
« on: June 14, 2020, 06:16:15 PM »
With everything going on, we haven't done a meetup in a while. In two weeks, I have a couple of friends coming down for the weekend, and I'm going to let them run my spare Guzzi for some riding. I'm pretty sure that neither of them have had mountain oysters, before, so I'm thinking that maybe I'll take them down for a bite at the Nut Hut in Altoona. Anybody interested in joining us?

May be able to make that work. Saturday evening? Would probably end up getting a motel room in the area and have a rambling ride both ways. Have only had one overnighter so far this year so that would be a good excuse, especially if the weather cools down a bit.

That sounds good to me. There are a couple of decent hotels just 30 minutes up 169, where I live. And I could introduce you to my favorite mom and pop hole in the wall beer bar.

Alright, then, let's do it. Saturday, June 26. How does 6 pm sound to everyone? Or should we make it earlier in the day?

Do you think it would be OK for a 180 weakling wearing a double knit shirt with the plastic protector in the shirt to show up driving his pick up truck? At my age and condition I'm taking all safety precautions.

TIA,Tex

Turnip, you're more than welcome, no matter how you get here, as you well know. I just spoke to the gal who runs the Prairie Nut Hut. Confirmed that they will be open on that date, at that time, and she went ahead and marked down to expect a group of anywhere from 5-10 people, just in case.

There is an America's Inn in Fredonia. Only about eight miles from the hut.

There are several options for hotels in that area. For anyone who cares to ride back to Chanute (20-30 min ride from the Hut) and make an evening of it, hanging out, chatting, and having a few beers, we have a decent Super 8 and a brand new Holiday Inn Express.

It's a long ride.  Who's staying there?   If we did and overnight.  It's been a long time to be kooked up.

(Still need to be safe from virus.)

My only need is to be at a motel before dark as the T-3 headlight sucks and my night vision isn't what it use to be.

Just an update. Looks like we have a decent number of people coming to this one. Most excellent! The official plan is for everyone to meet at the Prairie Nut Hut in Altoona at 6 pm. After we have a meal and hang out for awhile, people will head back home or to their hotels. For those who are staying in Chanute, a few of us may go out to a local watering hole for a beer, and all are welcome to join. Chill little hole in the wall, run by a nice old couple. The kind of local business that you can't help but love to support. If anyone has any questions, let me know.

Those staying in Canute staying a the Super 8? If so is the watering hole within reasonable walking distance of the motel?

I believe they are staying at the Super 8. It's a long walk from there, but I don't plan on getting sloshed, so I can provide transport for people to don't want to ride to and from a bar.

I'll be taking the Trans-America bicycle route from Ash Grove, Mo. and on to Pittsburgh Kan, Chanute and all points in between. Thinking pretty seriously about riding this to Colorado in the early fall. It's all conviently marked by these lovely signs, There's no interstate and takes you by points of interest along the way :thumb:

The route you posted will take you within four miles of my house as you are between Newton and Hesston. If you have any desire you are welcome to spend the night, have guest bed and bath along with a garage to park the bike in.

just curious, how many might be staying at the Super 8?   There's a pool there?  Is it a dry country or can we get some beer and ...?

I'm about 30% possible at best.  (tires)  Nothing can get shipped anymore.  Two weeks and no tire from Dallas?
