A few images from northern AZ!!
« on: June 22, 2020, 09:11:00 PM »
Took a drive to Mormon Lake / Upper Lake Mary, just outside of Flagstaff this morning.  Saw a herd of 50-75 Elk and a large, male Black Bear wandering along a trail.  Quite a treat! :thumb:   Nice and cool at 7,000 feet!

The Javelina herd came through my backyard at 5:30am this morning, with little "REDS" babies in tow.  The "scourge" of the the VOC and gardeners everywhere!! :thumb:

The best  Javelina I've had was cooked in a pit for about 9 hours, super tender, seasoned with red wine and an assortment of spices.  All the meat fell off the bones and was delicious. Pit was set up like they cook a pig for a Luau. I've also had it cooked in a crock pot but not nearly as tender.

You gotta know what you are doing when butchering those critters. They have a nasty musk gland on their lower back, that needs to be excised asap. The secretions from that gland will spoil the meat in a heartbeat, if it spreads. My brother in law used to hunt them during bow season, and first thing he did was cut that thing out and toss it on the ground. None of the dogs would eat that piece of meat when he was butchering/cleaning the peccary, and tossing pieces of scrap meat to his doggies. We would laugh,at one of his dogs who would eat almost anything, even broccoli, when competing with the other dogs for scraps, he would spit out the musk gland, and leave for a while, head hung low, all disgusted!
I have tried to eat them fixed many ways, even cooked with juniper berries to remove the "gaminess", and its always still there, in the background, as an aftertaste.
The best I have tried was cooked with  Hatch New Mexico red Chile powder, and peanut butter, in a type of mole' called "pipian".   :thumb:

So, a female House Finch, (in these two photos), made a nest our outdoor back patio wall pocket.   There are 3 little hatch-lings there now.  You can see their little yellow beaks.  They are fed by both the mother AND father.  Will try and get another photo of the father feeding them.  When she sits on the nest, he also feeds her to.

I was stationed in Yuma from 98-2000. Wife, kids and I really liked it. We spent every Extra minute we had in the Flagstaff area, beautiful country. Great state to own a camper in.

Does Oak Creek run through your backyard?

No, I am in the VOC (Village of Oak Creek), and Sedona, and Oak Creek as well as Oak Creek Canyon, is 5 miles north of me.

The other flowing river is the Verde River, and that runs through Cornville, Cottonwood, etc.

However, I do have a dry creek Arroyo that runs through my property, (see below), and when it monsoons, (July & August), it flows like a raging river!! :thumb:     This is also where the wildlife come through!  Like a frickin' highway, thus, "The Wildlife Corridor!"

"Protein alley".   :food:

For over 4 years, I have put the ol' Trail Cam out every night to catch the rare and elusive TOP PREDATOR of "Protein Alley" - - the Cougar / Puma / Mountain Lion.

My next door neighbor has a recent photo of one, lounging on his back patio decks a few weeks ago!!  They are here, as an adult one has to kill a deer every 7-10 days to survive...and we have a plethora of mule deer all around....

Maybe someday!  (*** SIGH ***)  :thumb:
