All I know about SPAM is that I remember having fried SPAM steaks occasionally when I was little.  Dad's HBP put an end to that, though.

And for some reason SPAM is very popular in Hawai'i.

The article explains it.  It's also popular in other parts of the world where the U.S. military was.  Coca Cola is also in that category.

number of years ago, wife (gf at the time) and I went to Hawaii for vacation and landed in the spanking middle of a Spam Festival...

it was weird and interesting...

we don't eat spam but it was sure fun to see how many different things they were able to make out of it...

Different flavors at Wally World.    https://www.walmart.com/ip/Spam-Bundle-of-Four-Flavors-Turkey-Bacon-Black-Pepper-and-Jalapeno/587620634

One of my favorites is grilled onions w/teriyaki sauce on steamed rice.  Pan grill your slices of SPAM in a frying pan.  After getting a golden crust on them.  Place to the side of the pan add sliced onions.  Douse with soy sauce.  Don't be bashful.  Add a tablespoon of sugar.  Let it reduce down and thicken.  Mix SPAM with teriyaki sauce & onions.  Serve on steamed rice w/salad or veggies on the side.  (Macaroni, potato, tossed green, peas or mixed veggies)   :food:

SPAM turducken cooked ala carp

Thin slice of SPAM smeared with potted meat then wrapped around a Vienna sausage and tooth picked. Place meats on a new white pine board and cook in a 350 degree oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the heat let rest for 10 minutes. Once cooled and congealed remove the meats from the board and throw in the trash. Then eat he board.

Spam Low Sodium.  Slice into 8 equal slices.  Place all slices iin one layer into large freezer bag.  Freeze.  Half life of forever.

A couple of times a week, I'll pull a frozen slice from the freezer bag.  Wrap in paper towel.  Nuke on high for 65-70 seconds.  There's your breakfast meat.  Nice with a couple of scrambled eggs.  Quick and easy and little clean up.

Or .... thaw (cook) same as above.  Cut slice of bread in two that is large enough to make half a sandwich.  Spam slice on one half bread slice.  Douse with Frenches' Yellow Mustard.  Place top slice on.  Nuke for another 20 seconds to steam bread.  Good for lunch snack when whole sandwich is too much. Quick.

I suspect Spam would be good with any of several hot bologna sauce recipes, too.

I once did a mixed grill of Spam and Treet with a champagne peppercorn glaze to help an interested girlfriend appreciate the differences between the two.  In the end, she also preferred Spam.  When I've been good, my wife will surprise me with grilled cheese & Spam sandwiches.  One of my favorite lunches.  They're even better than fried baloney sandwiches with tomato & mayonnaise.

Spam has been popular in many parts of the world where canned meat is more practical or convenient than refrigeration, including many parts of the Pacific.

I see Spam as salty mush meat in a can, I tried it a few times, yuck...I think canned hams are crappy but taste better than Spam.

Cannned ham? A one pound ham in a can is about $2.75. If you can't afford that you should not own a bike.    :azn:

For a family get together here at the double wide we open a few cans of Spam and make slices in the meat that holds some top shelf Velveeta. It is call ed a "Rack of spam". Set all this on a bed of organic turnip greens. Man, talk about living high on the hog'

In other parts of the world a can of Spam is expensive.  Canned ham even more so.

One of the old Master Granite Sculptors in Barre, VT was named Bruno Sarzanini.  Years before I began, Brunk carved in the same studio (actually the very same spot)  where I trained. I never met him.  He passed away long before I arrived.

His son stopped to visit one day when he was back in town,  He did what any of us were told do by the old men who cut stone- "stay out of the shed. go to college.  Get a real job" and became an engineer instead of a stone cutter.  Said he never did any famous or fancy statues like his father or we did.  But his favorite achievement was designing the machine that folds/makes the box for Velveeta.  "I get to see little sculptures I help make everywhere I go and everybody knows what they look like."   Very cool.
