All 2003 Hydros? Bought it anyway.
« on: October 22, 2021, 04:44:08 PM »
I’ve been looking again at adding a Guzzi to the garage after being Gooseless for some years now.  I’m looking at a 2003 Stone but it has the look of the 2002 and the flakey engine paint.  We’re those still hydros or leftover 2002 models brought over later?  I checked recalls on it and only the triple tree recall came back as needing done.

Easy enough to check, pull a valve cover, regular adjusters = non hydraulic, no adjusters or broken off adjuster tops = hydraulic. Information from Moto Guzzi regarding recalls in this era and completion of said recalls is not to be trusted.

I guess I was just thinking that none of the Hydro engines had the texture flaky engine paint.

If you look down at the 12:00 position opposite the sparkplug side where the jug meets the block see if there is two plugs(looks like the end and size if a 22 cal  bullet)  Yes- then hyd.  No- adjustable rockers, don't even have to remove the valve covers.

Forgot to mention.  Now confirmed it is NOT a hydro.  In my last 18 years of owning and following Guzzi I’ve seen this before where old stock gets brought over in the “new” year.  What I find interesting here with this one is that it has the flakey paint of the 2002 and prior years but it has the 2003 one piece seat   Vin and such matches.  We’ll see.

Pretty sure the front crossover is a reliable tell for a hydro.  Easy to spot in pictures

If so, then that’s even more confirmation of it NOT being a hydro.

Oh well, I done went and bought it.  I think this is the 12th Goose to ever have graced the garage here, and no less than my 5th 1100 Cali.  Here comes my Fall/Winter project.  Whole bunch of stuff I gotta remove and replace on it; as I’ve sadly seen before, previous owner apparently thought it was a great low dollar Harley and put forward controls, hideously sounding mufflers, and other “bagger” looking stuff on it.  Seems to run “okay” but it will need to be fully gone through and possibly the removal of that flakey paint, or not depending.

Enjoy another Cali, don't forget to take your phone. Hydro's are sweet motors, you got 3 more hp than flatties.

Hey G Stevie, mine is actually NOT a hydro.  But I appreciate the sentiment.  Mine is basically a 2002 except for the seat.

I’m still in the process of pulling all the junk off it the previous owners had on it (forward controls, slash pipes, etc.) and replacing with Guzzi parts.  Too ashamed to post a pic right now.   Maybe a before and after pic later  :thumb:  It is a 2002 Stone scheme with the solid black tank, grey stripe down center, red logo on tank, with grey fenders.

Plenty of mixing and matching went on then. My EV has an o2 sensor and all the wiring for one, but has the wrong ECU.

Nice.  You the man, John.  Ultimately, I might hit you up for some input/assistance on the front brake as I’d like to add a 2nd caliper up there on this Stone.  I know there are is a good bit of info here and on Guzzitech.  I’ll search around.

My 03 EV is also a weird one, Hydro engine, double clutch disc, external fuel pump, electric fuel tap, older style regulator and 15M computer.  It took me a while to figure out what parts to order!

Mine is the same way. My tank is black and chrome. The fuel tap had been replace with a manual. Luckily I haven't needed to order any parts, but the 2002 manual seems closest to what it is.

I’m just now getting around to doing some serious pulling and inspecting on the bike, haven’t had much time the last week.  And…I was mistaken.  It is a hydro.  I pulled the cover, snapped off adjusters, shiny caps, etc.  Finally got a pair of stock muffs off ebay and installed those last night.  What bliss, bike sounds so wonderful, runs much better than with the Harley clones that were on it.  I have really missed having a Guzzi in the garage these last several years.  Now to work on removing the forward controls and service all around.

I've heard it said that a sorted Hydro is the best 1100 to be had. Sounds like it's going well.

I think I have the Givi screen that was once yours, and made it's way 'round, and ended up on my Jackal. Retired and in the basement at this point...

Hey Kid, I might ultimately give that some thought depending.  Wanna get the bike set up and running the way I want before investing in anything else right now.
