Here's some info you may find interesting from the archives of guzzitech: http://archive.guzzitech.com/RearShocks.html
Don't tow anything but I put Ikons on several years ago. For the money they have been ok.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

I have looked at these options I'm wondering what people have tried. The ones I need are 13.5in
I have a set of 13in stock shocks I snagged off ebay I'm wondering if those will hold up under the load I will put on them, an I have a set of 14in Progressive which are too long I tried them an they make my bike stand too tall.
I still have some time before riding season starts to find some correct fitment shocks for my bike.
Thanks for the answer.Ride safe

I put a set of Ikons on the 96 Cali last summer. I took a couple trips both solo and 2 up and they work great. Nice adjustability of spring load and dampening.

I just came accross this website the other day.... http://www.flatlandcycles.com/ I had never heard of these but, they look to have replacable eyelets of varying length from 10 to 40mm.

I am confused -- OK, I know, "so what else is new?"  ::) -- but I have the YSS ones from Todd on Guzzitech on my '98 EV and am quite pleased for solo, two-up, and GVWR riding.

In truth, I really liked the OEM, but when they went, got some Works, which I quickly dumped (tho not while attached to the EV!  :-* )

Think I had Progressive ones after that, and found those OK, but only OK.

The YSS are quite fine.  Nary a "wallow" nor "kathunk" since.

BTW, thanks.  We needed some sort of "oil thread," and this will do nicely.   ;)

I was just thinking bout the shocks these days.... OEM work somehow, but are.. well... whatever was cheapest at the time the bike was produced.

I do not ride slowly.

Ikons are around 350-400€...
Hagon go for half that, but doubt they will suit my needs...
Wilbers go for twice the money of konis.. or more (over 600-1000€, depending on the model)
Bitubo about the same as konis, maybe a bit cheaper

So... what are your experiences, apart from koni/ikon being OK...?

I put a set up HD air shocks on years ago and they work well..  Able to pump it up depending on the load. I think they were only about $25.00 on eBay from someone wanting to put lowering shocks on their bike..

HD really isnt known for its sporting ability these days... :)
How do they handle in peg-scraping turns and engine hitting the limiter kind of riding?

On hot days when pushed hard my stock ones turn to mush - happened a few times. First time I actually stopped to check if I have a flat...:)

Anyway, I was being an idiot, opened the link suggested in this topic:
http://archive.guzzitech.com/RearShocks.html
...and never got around to checking it. Its all there. :)
Thanx JoeB

My Hagons are quite fine for what I do and the price was right. if you get the importer he will make sure you get the right springs for your size and load. sorry, can't find his name right now.

I just put a set of the Gazi Hyper X on my Calvin as part of this winter's upgrading. Not riding until spring but in my hand they looked very well made and lighter than OEM. Todd recommended them as Ohlins equivalents without the Ohlins price tag. We shall see. Anyone riding on a set of these?

I put Ikons on my '98 EV but replaced the supplied spring with one a step lighter. I am more interested in a compliant ride than one designed for the racetrack. It still worked very well on the racetrack but the bike made for a much better touring bike.
Most of my friends who have ordered Works Performance have had to lighten the spring as well. Rather than just selecting a brand look for one with complete adjustability for compression and rebound and a selection of spring rates so you can tune it for your riding style.

I use Ikon 7614s on my Bonneville and like them very much.  The spring rates do seem a little on the strong side, but I'm a little on the large side (235 lbs), so they work great for me.  I would like to get some Ikon 7610s for my Vintage, but the Sachs shocks have really performed very well, so I think I'll hold on to them a bit longer.  However, I'm going to install some Hyperpro fork springs...once they go in, a flaw may be exposed in the rear suspension that is not yet apparent.

I put a set of Ikons on my EV last year for going from solo rides to two up towing a Kompact Kamp in the mountains.
The adjustment range covers it all.
I called MG Cycle and they worked out the details with Ikon to custom build the shocks as I needed.
Reasonable price and work great.

Ikons and upgrade/change the springs in the fork tubes. You'll be surprised by the results.

I've got the more expensive hagon nitros.  I really like them.  I also have hyperpro progressive fork springs.

California 1100 1998 rear shocks: advice needed
« Reply #23 on: January 19, 2016, 03:52:00 PM »
Help please 1998 California 1100..my Bitubo shocks are dead, can I use any replacement shock that is of the same length and load ...need to keep price low since I don't ride much and am a casual cruiser. I see some no-names on eBay for under $200.
Appreciate any advice!
Thanks!

Contact Dave Quinn , he supplies Hagon shocks that work very well on MG , priced at a bit over $200.00 for the base model .

Progressive series 12s are OK.
I like the Ikon shocks. You can get them from MGCycle.

But most importantly, I thought that in 1998, they were all EVs. I didn't know you could get a California 1100 in 1998.
